It was her sister, Josephine, who told her. Her husband Richard had been in the newspaper office when the news of the railway accident was received, with Brent Mallard’s name leading the list of “killed”. On hearing the news Louise cried at once in her sister’s arms. When her tears ended she went to her room alone. She would have no one follow her. She sank into the fortable armchair that faced the open window, as if she was pressed down by a sadness that seemed to reach into her soul. From the window she could see the tops of trees and new green spring life. The delicious smell of rain was in the air. Some blue sky could be seen through the clouds. She was young, with a fair, calm and intelligent face. But now there was an empty look in her eyes, as she dully stared out at the sky. Fearing for her sister, Josephine came to the door and begged Louise to e out. Finally she opened the door. She held her sister’s waist and together they came down the stairs. Richard stood waiting for them at the bottom. Suddenly there was the sound of someone opening the front door. Brent Mallard entered. Home ing B After years of research and testing, the hybrid car was developed and put on the market. It’s an interesting and exciting new improvement in today’s world as we look for better ways to protect the quality of the air we breathe and conserve our natural resources. The quality of our air is affected by many different things. But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline which are used to power a car’s engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air, and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and therefore causes less pollution. A hybrid car is a bination of a regular car that runs on gasoline and an electric car that is battery powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partially electric, you have to plug it in to charge it. But that’s not how it works. The 144 volt battery pack is actually recharged through the energy that is produced when the car’s brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”, because it generates electricity. Although the hybrid car still runs on gasoline most of the time, this helps it use less gas than a regular car. When the driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically shuts off to save fuel. Then, as soon as the driver puts the car in gear and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up. Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldn’t happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashes a warning on its puter screen that says, “I am low on gas”. When it pletely runs out, the warning reads, “YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!” Then the electric power supply kicks in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station. 51. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. The hybrid car will be put on the market. B. Hybrid cars run faster than regular cars. C. When the hybrid car stops at a traffic light, the driver will get a warning. D. The burning of fossil fuels is one of the largest sources of air pollution. 52. According to the passage, the word “hybrid” refers to ________. A. a high tech discovery B. energy saving C. a new invention D. a bination of two things 53. “Regenerative braking” is an important process of the hybrid car because ________. A. it allows the car to e to a quick stop B. it gives the driver a smoother ride C. it produces energy to charge the battery D. it can control the speed of the car 54. Which of the following is right about the EPA? A. They designed hybrid cars. B. They outlawed (宣布……為不合法) the burning of fossil fuels. C. They set important guidelines that help control pollution. D. Their main purpose is to protect endangered plants and animals. 55. Which of the following is the reason for developing hybrid cars? A. They use less gas than regular cars. B. They’re safer to drive than most cars. C. They’re more modern than other cars. D. They cost less than regular cars. C In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum (最大值) rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase, and therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city. Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage. Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity (尊嚴(yán)). Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages. Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal”. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions. 56. There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may ________. A. cause a shortage of apartments B. worry those who rent apartments as homes C. increase the profits of landlords D. encourage landlords to invest in building apartment 57. According to the critics, rent control ________. A. will always benefit those who rent apartments B. is unnecessary C. will bring negative effects in the long run D. is necessary under all circumstances 58. The problem of unemployment will arise ________. A. if the minimum wage is set too high B. if the minimum wage is set too low C. if the workers are unskilled D. if the maximum wage is set 59. The passage tells us ________. A. the relationship between supply and demand B. the possible results of government controls C. the necessity of government control D. the urgency of getting rid of government controls 60. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The results of economic decisions can not always be predicted. B. Minimum wage can not always protect employees. C. Economic theory can predict the results of economic decisions if other factors are not changing. D. Economic decisions should not be based on economic theory. D LONDON(Reuters)—Quiet please—Britain’s Queen Elizabeth is preparing to have her swans counted. Buckingham Palace has announced that the annual Swan Upping, a tradition dating back to the 12th century which involves a counting of the swan population on the River Thames, will be conducted by the Queen’s official Swan Marker from July 20 to July 24. “With the assistance of the Queen’s Swan Warden, Professor Christopher Perrins of the University of Oxford, the swans and young cygnets (小天鵝) are also assessed for any signs of injury or disease,” Buckingham Palace said in announcing the count. The process involves the Swan Marker, David Barber, rowing up the Thames for five days with the Swan Warden in traditional wooden boats while wearing special scarlet uniforms and counting, weighing and measuring swans and cygnets. It may seem strange, but it is very important to the Queen. According to custom, Britain’s queen or king owns all unmarked, mute (不出聲的) swans in open water, but the Queen now exercises the right only on areas of the Thames and its nearby tributaries. In medieval (中世紀(jì)) times, the Swan Marker would not only travel up the river counting the swans, but would catch as many as possible as they were sought after for banquets and feasts. This year, the Swan Marker and the Swan Warden are particularly keen to discover how much damage is being caused to swans and cygnets by attacks from dogs and from abandoned fishing tackle (漁具). It is also an important year because Queen Elizabeth has decided to join her team of Swan Uppers for part of the census. She will follow them up the river and visit a local school project on the whole subject of swans, cygnets and the Thames. “Education and conservation are essential to the role of Swan Upping and the involvement of school children is always a rewarding experience,” Buckingham Palace said. 61. In medieval times, ________. A. swans were better protected than now B. a lot of swans were killed by dogs C. swans were a delicious dish on royal banquets D. mon people could catch the swans 62. We can infer from the passage that the process of counting the swans ________. A. remains almost unchanged in the past years B. involves a lot of royal members C. sometimes lasts longer than before D. is always guarded by special soldiers 63. This year, the Swan Marker and the Swan Warden mainly want to find out ________. A. the exact number of swans and cygnets B. how a local school project is going on C. how much damage the swans and cygnets suffer D. how education and conservation are carried out along the Thames 64. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage? A. Britain’s Queen is concerned about swans. B. Britain’s Queen orders a count of swans. C. An old tradition in Buckingham Palace. D. Queen Elizabeth will count swans herself. 65. The underlined word “tributaries” can be best- 1.請仔細(xì)閱讀文檔,確保文檔完整性,對于不預(yù)覽、不比對內(nèi)容而直接下載帶來的問題本站不予受理。
