The hospital wanted payment for surgery totaling $41,188. John had never set foot in that hospital. Obviously there was some mistake. “I thought it was a joke,” says John. But when John phoned the agency, nobody laughed. Someone, who’s also named John Smith, using John’s Social Security number, had indeed been admitted for surgery. He figured clearing this up would take just a few phone calls. Two years later, John continues to suffer from the damage to his credit rating and still doesn’t know if his medical record has been cleared of wrong information. John Smith was the victim of a little-known but frightening type of consumer cheating that is on the rise:medical identity theft, which involves using your name to get drugs, expensive medical treatment and even cheating insurance payments. As John discovered, money isn’t the half of it. When someone steals your name to receive health care, his medical history becomes part of your record - and setting the record straight can be extremely difficult. That’s because, in part, the information is handed out among dozens of care-givers, from doctors to medicine stores to insurance companies and labs. “I wanted to help straighten this out,” says John, “so I went to the hospital, and they had a three-inch-thick record for me, but they wouldn’t let me see it. I showed them my ID, and they said that’s not John Smith’s signature. Well , of course not! They had this other guy’s signature. ” John had fallen into a victim’s Catch-22:If your record doesn’t appear to be yours, you may not have the right to read it, much less change it. John ’s next step was a visit to the police department. But the police said that there was not much they could do, that the local law enforcement has little experience with medical ID theft, and cases like this can end up being considered a civil matter. 41. The billing agency sent John Smith a notice to _______. A. play a joke on him for medical treatment B. inform him of the payment for a surgery C. correct the mistakes about payment for a surgery D. clear up the wrong information in his medical record 42. John Smith at first thought the solving of his problem was _______. A. easy B. difficult C. impossible D. unnecessary 43. The number of medical identity theft cases is ________. A. increasing B. decreasing C. unbelievable D. stable 44. An even worse consequence of medical ID theft is _______. A. some trouble in obtaining payment B. a big loss of money and damage to credit rating C. the widely spread medical information of the victim D. the difficulty in changing the wrong medical history 45. The expression “Catch-22” in the passage actually means ______. A. John was caught 22 times cheating B. John was involved in 22 cases C. John got no way out D. John got angry B There is an English saying: “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying very seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to study laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found the facts that laughter really can improve people’s health. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial(有益的). Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produce pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group which tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce endorphins in the brain. These are natural chemicals which diminish (消除)both stress and pain. There is also some fact to suggest that laughter helps the body’s immune(免疫) system, that is, the system which fights infection(感染). In an experiment, one group of students watched a funny video while another group of students served as the control group – in other words, a group with which to compare the first group. Doctors checked the blood of the students in both groups and found that the people in the group that watch the video had an increase in the activity of their white blood cells, that is, the cells which fight infection. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they try to improve their patients condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. 46. According to the passage, ______. A. All the people have realized the positive effect laughter has on us B. Nobody knows the positive effect laughter has on us C.
