I found an ad for selling greeting cards in the back of a children’s magazine. I thought to myself I could do this. I begged my mother to let me send for the kit (配件). Two weeks later the kit arrived. The next three hours later, I returned home with no card and a pocket full of money shouting, “Mama, all the people couldn’t wait to buy my cards!” A salesperson was born. When I was twelve years old, my father took me to see Zig Ziegler. I remember sitting in the dark hall listening to Mr. Ziegler raise everyone’s spirits up to ceiling. I left there feeling like I could do anything. When we got to the car, I turned to my father and said, “Dad, I want to make people feel like that.” My father asked me what I meant. “I want to be a motivational speaker just like Mr. Ziegler,” I replied. A dream was born. Recently, I began pursuing my dream of motivating others. I realized that everything I had accomplished — the graduate degree, the successful sales career, speaking appointments, training and managing for a major fortune 100 company as a senior manager— had prepared me for this moment. I told my boss who was a great leader I would leave the company though I might not reach such a height in career. He told me to proceed and he believed I would succeed. Having made that decision, I was immediately tested. One week after I gave notice, my husband was laid off from his job. We had recently bought a new home and needed both incomes to make the monthly mortgage (抵押) payment and now we were done to no income. I even planned to turn back to my former company, knowing they wanted me to stay but I was certain that if I went back, I would never leave. I decided I still wanted to move forward rather than end up with a mouth full of “if onlys” later on. A motivational speaker was born. When I held fast to my dream, even during the tough times, the miracles(奇跡) really began to happen. In a short time period my husband found a better job. We didn’t miss a mortgage payment. And I was able to book several speaking appointments with new clients (客戶). I discovered the incredible power of dreams. I loved my old job, my workmates and the company I left, but it was time to get on with my dream. To celebrate my success I had a local artist paint my new office as a garden. At the top of one wall she marked, “The world always makes way for the dreamer.” 51.Why was the kit sent for? A. Selling greeting cards. B. Collecting greeting cards. C. Buying greeting cards. D. Sending greeting cards. 52.When did the author decide to become a motivational speaker? A. After buying a new home by mortgage. B. After giving notice to leave her secure position in the company. C. After finding a job in a major fortune 100 company. D. After listening to Mr. Ziegler’s inspiring speech. 53.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE? A. She was once an excellent manager. B. She left her post at the height of her career. C. She was not sure whether the former company could accept her. D. She didn’t miss paying the monthly mortgage payment. 54.What does the underlined sentence mean in the last paragraph? A. Carry on with your dreams and you will be successful. B. Risk everything you have for a dream and you will succeed. C. The world belongs to dreamers. D. Everyone will find their dreams. B London started its first major bike hire scheme (方案) on July 30th. Transport For London (TFL), the agency responsible for moving people around England’s capital, put 5,000 bicycles in 400 different locations around the city. The idea is to cut traffic, reduce pollution and provide a greener way of getting around London’s streets. The scheme had a few small problems on its first day as people could not lock the bikes properly once they had finished riding them. As a gesture of goodwill, London Mayor Boris Johnson announced all rentals (租金) on the first day would be free of charge. The bikes are available for free for the first 30 minutes but costs go up sharply since then. Renters have to pay $1.60 for the first hour and $78 for 24 hours. The bikes are clearly designed for very short trips. TFL says it sees a “cycle revolution” happening in London. It predicts there will be around 40,000 new cycle journeys every day on the rental bikes. Mr. Johnson says he wants to see a return to the turn of the 20th century, when 20 per cent of journeys in London were made by bicycle. The scheme has received a lot of positive feedback (反饋) in the first two days. Many Londoners believe it is a great alternative (替代品) to London’s overcrowded and overpriced trains and buses. One person, Andy Clark, told the Reuters news agency, “It’s a great idea. I’ve seen it operating in Paris and Barcelona and thought why don’t we have one?” The Londonist Blog said the bikes were very strong and were “designed to bear a beating from both careless cyclists and drunken people”. 55. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. London starts a new bike hire scheme. B. London needs better measures to cut traffic. C. London encourages people to buy bikes. D. London decides to protect the environment. 56. At the beginning of the scheme, there was some difficulty with the ____. A. rental B. time C. distance D. lock 57. Which of the following is NOT the purpose of the bike rental scheme? A. To reduce traffic pressure. B. To protect nature. C. To decrease pollution. D. To beautify the city. 58. It can be learned from the passage that ____. A. the bikes are designed for long journeys in London B. it costs nearly $80 to rent one of the bikes for a day C. London is the first city to start the bike rental scheme D. All Londoners approve of the scheme C Sure, it’s good to get along with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant. And yes, it’s good to get along with your teacher because, in general, it’s smart to learn how to understand the different types of people you’ll meet throughout your life. “But really, there’s one super-important reason why you should get along with your teacher. When you do, learning bursts right open,” says Evelyn Vuko, a longtime teacher who writes an education column(專欄) called “Teacher Says” for the Washington Post newspaper. In fact, kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems, such as problems with learning or school life, such as bullying. As a kid in a primary or middle school, you’re at a wonderful stage in your life. You’re like a sponge (海綿), able to absorb lots of new and exciting information. On top of that, you’re able to think about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows that, in most cases, is very excited to be the person who’s giving you all that material and helping you make it. Remember, teachers are people, too, and they feel great if you’re open to what they’re teaching you. That’s why they wanted to be teachers in the first place—to teach! Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether they like the teacher or not. But most kids are sensitive to the way they get along with the teacher, and if things aren’t going well, they won’t learn as well and won’t enjoy being in class. 59.In the passage, the author mainly talks about _______. A. how to get along well with others B. the importance of a good relation with teachers C. how much the students are expected of to get along with teachers D. how to make the time in the classroom more pleasant 60.“Learning bursts right open” in the third paragraph really means _______. A. learning becomes easier for you at once B. you find an opening to learning C. there’ll be more problems with learning D. there’ll be no problems at all with learning 61.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. If you get on well with your teachers, you must have a good result in exams. B. The more questions you ask, the higher marks you will get. C. If you have a good relationship with your teacher, you can turn to him when in trouble. D. Many kids can do well without a good relationship with teachers. 62.Which of the comments is FALSE on teachers and their work according to the passage? A. Teachers are excited even if you wouldn’t like to accept their teaching. B. Teachers sometimes have the same feelings as students do. C. Though few, there are still some students who can learn even if they don’t like the teacher. D. Having a bad relationship with your teachers does more or less harm to your studies. D One of my favorite things I like to watch is the bloopers (洋相) and outtakes(花絮) that are shown of mistakes made during the making of a movie. Most DVDs have a section of outtakes, and often they will set me off laughing, especially when you know what was supposed to happen. We all make mistakes, and have many bloopers and outtakes in a lifetime. Some of them may be funny like movie bloopers, a stupid mistake and we are able to laugh at ourselves. Other outtakes in life, however, are not funny. I am referring to the tragic turns of events that happen in life that can turn our life in a moment. Accidents, disaster, the death of a loved one happen unexpectedly, and can greatly affect our lives. These are outtakes we would prefer not to happen or even replayed in our life. Times of crisis and tragedy can not be prevented, but how you handle these outtakes will affect the rest of your life. There is always a choice in any crisis. We can choose to feel upset, but keep hopes and move forward, or choose to become stuck in the past. We cannot choose our circumstances, but we do have a choice how we respond to them. We can give in or overcome, and our choice will determine our future. When we drive a car our focus is the road ahead; if we spend all our time looking in the rearview mirror(后視鏡) failure is more or less inevitable(不可避免)! The same is true in life. We will fail, or at best remain at a standstill if we keep looking back and focusing on the events behind us, reliving the past. 63. The author mentions the outtakes of a movie in the first paragraph because . A. most people have the hobby of watching them B. they are part of a movie C. he wants to direct us to his topic in a natural way D. he just wants to tell us a story 64. The outtakes in our life are different from those of a movie because . A. not all of them are funny B. they can be avoided C. they are more funny D. they happen more often 65. The purpose of the author is to tell us . A. the different kinds of outtakes in real life B. his funny experience in watching a movie C. to choose the right attitude towards outtakes in life D. what we should learn from the outtakes in real life 66. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Outtakes! Give in or overcome? B. Outtakes will destroy you. C. There is always a choice in any crisis. D. Keep hopes whatever happens. E A recent study, which was published in last week’s Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how dangerous it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers has three times the possibility of a serious accident, compared with a teenager driving alone. 6 M$ x, T# g7 u: L1 e+ r: a2 ^3 r2 D& s; t# h; jThe authors also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident. " M2 a) O9 E/ ~: a, J! f9 k" X* h, T# ]1 }Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. “The basic issue is that adults who are responsible for giving out licenses fail to recognize how complex and skilled driving is.” he says. Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to mitigate (使緩解) the problem is to have states set up so-called graduated licensing systems, in which getting a license is a process with several stages. A graduated license requires that a teen- 1.請仔細(xì)閱讀文檔,確保文檔完整性,對于不預(yù)覽、不比對內(nèi)容而直接下載帶來的問題本站不予受理。
