The green roofs that are used these days can be classified as “extensive” and “intensive” systems. Extensive green roofs use mosses, grasses and herbs, which are tolerant to droughts. These plants do not need much maintenance, can be grown in a layer of substratum (底土層) that can be as shallow as 1.5 inches, and generally are inaccessible to the public. In contrast,a wide range of species of plants are grown on intensive green roofs, such as bushes and even trees, which require deeper substratum layers, and are usually grown on flat roofs. They need intensive maintenance, and are usually areas that resemble parks which are accessible to people. There are several benefits of adopting green roof technologies. Apart from the obvious psychological and artistic benefits of garden — like environments surrounding you, some of the mon economic and ecological benefits are: a reduction in making use of energy; air and water purification; recovering green spaces; and the lessening of the heat island effect in urban areas. The green roof research that is currently ongoing is focused on evaluating the species of plants that are suitable to be grown on roofs, the method of establishment, nutrient and water requirement, substrata, and the quantity and quality of water runoff. The evaluation criteria of plant species are: at what rate they can be established; their ability to survive invasive weeds; tolerance of cold and heat; tolerance of drought conditions; ability of survival. Green roof technology is representative of a pletely new market for landscape contractors (承包人), and all roofs that currently exist and the future ones to be constructed are the potential market — a market that is too huge to be ignored. 語篇解讀:隨著無休止的建筑對原本美好的綠色空間的日益破壞,綠色房頂概念應運而生。在屋頂種植綠色植物可以美化空間、凈化空氣、節(jié)省能源,好處不勝枚舉。 1.Why do people think of the idea of green roofs? The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people:as we get older, many of us will bee less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight. Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others bee disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they bee. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by peoples attitude towards them. Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage it if you could not get up steps, or onto buses and trains. How would you cope with it if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the ablebodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability that counts. Title:(1) The ________ (2)________ number of the disabled around the world Over 450 million Some countries with the disabled India:(3) more than ________ the total population of Canada. This is a lesson that some large American corporations have learned the hard way. Whats in the name? Sometimes the problem is the name. When General Motors introduced its Chevy Nova to Latin America, it overlooked the fact that Nova in Spanish means “It doesnt go”.Sure enough, the Chevy Nova never went anywhere in Latin America. Translation problems Sometimes it is the slogan that doesnt work. No pany knows this better than Pepsi Cola with its “e alive with Pepsi !” campaign. The campaign was so successful in the United States that Pepsi translated its slogan literally for its international campaign. As it turned out, the translations werent quite right. Pepsi was begging Germans to “e out of the grave” and telling the Chinese that “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave”. A pictures worth a thousand words Other times, the problem involves packaging. A picture of a smiling baby has helped sell countless jars of Gerber baby food. When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the smiling baby on the label. Later they learned that in African countries, the picture on the jar shows what the jar has in it, for many people there cant read. Twist of fate Even culture, religious factors and pure coincidence can be involved. Thom McAn shoes have a Thom McAn signature inside. To people in Bangladesh, which is a Muslim country, this signature looked like Arabic script for the word Allah. In that country, feet are considered unclean, and Muslims felt the pany was offending Gods name by having people walk on it. 語篇解讀:如何在激烈的商戰(zhàn)中立足?如何才能拓展國際市場?文章告訴我們首先一定要做一些市場調(diào)查。 5.From the text we learn that ________.
