I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself. Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously. At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just finished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “Youve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the damaged cars windscreen, giving my phone number. I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,” I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt hed witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked. He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful. 4.The man felt ________ to have delivered the furniture himself. A.grateful B.proud C.confident D.regretful 解析:選D 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 5.The man trembled violently because ________. A.the lorry was too difficult to drive B.he caused a terrible traffic accident C.he was afraid to see the three people D.the furniture was too heavy for him 解析:選A 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中的“I got out, trembling violently, like one who had just finished a stormy Atlantic crossing”及第二段最后一句“My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously”可知,由于卡車難以駕駛,“我”十分緊張,故A項(xiàng)正確。 6.The man said he was a bad man most probably because ________. A.he shouldnt have driven the lorry himself B.he made the traffic accident on purpose C.he shouldnt have caused trouble for the disabled D.he parked the big lorry on the pavement 解析:選C 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段中的“There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man”可知,由于刮壞了帶有殘疾人標(biāo)志的車,這可能會(huì)給其帶來(lái)麻煩,因此“我”覺(jué)得自己是一個(gè)壞人,故C項(xiàng)正確。 7.The writer intended to suggest that ________. A.it was thrilling to drive a lorry B.being too confident is foolish C.it was hard to avoid accidents D.the boss was expert in driving 解析:選B 推理判斷題。 Every now and then, a product es along that proves itself a plete gamechanger, as is the case with a new British brand and invention, Eyejusters — the reading glasses that you can focus yourself — for less than £ 70! With 6 in 10 people wearing glasses in the UK, those with perfect vision are increasingly in the minority. And of those who do require glasses, many find themselves requiring two or three pairs of glasses in order to plete different tasks throughout the day. As well as being an added expense on_top_of everything else, this also means carrying around (and trying not to lose) those extra pairs! Eyejusters allow you to instantly change the lens (鏡片) strength of your glasses with hidden dials, tucked just inside the frames themselves. Eyejusters work by the wearer simply turning the concealed eyeDials to change the focus to fit your needs. The lenses adjust from +0.00 to +3.00 D. They also have antiscratch technology and are lightweight in design so you arent paying the price of fort for convenience. The creator of Eyejusters, Owen Reading — who came up with the idea for Eyejusters with friend David Crosby, who studied physics at Oxford with him, explained:“Lots of people need reading glasses but they need glasses with lots of different strength. They might have a pair with +1 prescriptionstrength lenses for the puter, +2s for reading and +3s for really closeup stuff. Eyejusters replace the need for multiple pairs of reading glasses, by covering the whole range from zero to +3, which is the strongest you will find in overthecounter products.” He added:“If you wear reading glasses, these are a much more flexible alternative. You can put them on and just turn the dial until what you want to see es into focus. They are much like using binoculars (雙筒望遠(yuǎn)鏡).” 8.Which has the closest meaning to the underlined part “on top of” in Para.2? A.Joan stays on_top_of the news by reading newspapers. B.A submarine can run under water as well as on_top_of water. C.When I turned the corner, I was right on_top_of the post office. D.He promised to help us and on_top_of that he lent us many books. 9.Eyejusters are popular for the following reasons EXCEPT their ________. A.new brand B.a(chǎn)ntiscratch technology C.light weight D.low price 解析:選A 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第一段最后的“for less than £ 70”可知,它的價(jià)格低,排除D項(xiàng);根據(jù)第三段最后一句中的“They also have antiscratch technology and are lightweight in design so you arent paying the price of fort for convenience”可知,它有抗抓痕技術(shù),還很輕便,排除B項(xiàng)和C項(xiàng)。故選A項(xiàng)。 10.How can you make Eyejusters serve different purposes? A.By folding glasses. B.By adjusting lenses. C.By bining glasses. D.By changing lenses. B。 11.Who need Eyejusters most according to Owen Reading? A.People having perfect vision. B.People wearing reading glasses. C.People changing glasses constantly. D.People preferring fortable glasses. D (2019石家莊模擬)Experts believe that the best time to teach kids language skills is when they are babies. Most time the task is easily acplished with parents reading or talking to their babies. However, in some cases that is not possible due to busy work schedules or when kids are born deaf. Now, an adorable blueeyed robot, a human avatar, and some hightech neuroscience may be able to assist parents with this important developmental task. The Robot AVatar thermalEnhanced system, or RAVE, is the brainchild of a team of researchers led by LauraAnn Petitto, an educational neuroscientist, at Washington, D. C.s Gallaudet University. The learning process begins when the robots camera, which is focused on the babys face, detects tiny changes in his/her body temperature. This, bined with the babys facial expression, causes the robot to turn its head and guide the babys attention to a puter screen, on which a human avatar starts to municate with the baby, much like a parent would. For example, if the baby points towards the screen, the avatar might respond, “Are you pointing to me?” and follow that up with a nursery rhyme, fairy tale, or some essential social munication, all in American Sign Language (ASL). The “conversation” continues until the kid loses interest. The researchers, who have been testing the system for three years, found that babies as young as 6 to 8 months old began to move their hands in a rhythm similar to ASL after interacting with RAVE for just a few minutes. Petitto says natural language, whether municated through speech or sign, activates the same parts of the brain and believes the rhythmic motions prove the babies are learning the essential elements of munication. What sets this technique apart from other methods, such as showing educational videos or television shows, is its interactive nature and realtime response to the babys actions. The researchers say that while it is too early to determine the systems longterm influence on baby munication, the initial response has been very encouraging. Next, they plan to introduce an avatar that can both sign and speak to babies. 12.What can the RAVE system help parents do?
