I have worked with numerous children infected with the virus that causes AIDS.The relation ships that I have had with these special kids have been gifts in my life.They have taught me so many things,but I have especially learned that great cour
2、age can be found in the smallest of packages. Let me tell you about Tyler.
我曾經(jīng)和數(shù)不清的感染上艾滋病病毒的孩子打過(guò)交道。我和這些特殊的孩子之間的關(guān)系是生活賦予我的恩賜。他們教會(huì)我許多東西,我尤其懂得了即使在最弱小的人物身上也能發(fā)現(xiàn)其所蘊(yùn)含的巨大勇氣。讓我告訴你泰勒的故事。
Tyler was born infected with HIV;his mother was also infected.From the very beginning of his life,he was dependent on
3、medications to enable him to survive.When he was five,he had a tube surgically inserted in a vein in his chest.This tube was connected to a pump,which he carried in a small backpack on his back.Medications were hooked up to this pump and were continuously supplied through this tube to his bloodstrea
4、m.At times,he also needed supplemented oxygen to support his breathing.
泰勒出生前就從母體感染上艾滋病病毒。自他來(lái)到人間就一直靠藥物維持生命。他5歲時(shí)做手術(shù),胸部插了一根管子,管子連著他背的背包里的泵。泵不斷地把藥通過(guò)管子輸入他的血液。有時(shí)他還需要補(bǔ)充氧氣幫助呼吸。
Tyler wasn't willing to give up one single moment of his childhood to this deadly disease.It was not unusual to find him pla
5、ying and racing around his backyard,wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of oxygen behind him in his little wagon.All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the energy it gave him.Tyler's mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast she nee
6、ded to dress him in red.That way,when she peered through the window to check on him playing in the yard,she could quickly spot him.
泰勒不愿把童年的一分一秒屈服于致命的疾病。經(jīng)常能發(fā)現(xiàn)他背著裝藥的背包和拖著載有氧氣罐的小車在他家后院玩耍奔跑。我們所有認(rèn)識(shí)泰勒的人都驚嘆生命帶給他那純樸的歡樂(lè)和賦予他的活力。泰勒的媽媽經(jīng)常逗他說(shuō),他動(dòng)得那么快,得給他穿件紅衣服。這樣,她透過(guò)窗戶查看他在院子里玩得怎樣時(shí),能一眼發(fā)現(xiàn)他。

7、e eventually wore down even the likes of a little dynamo like Tyler.He grew quite ill and,unfortunately,so did his HIV-infected mother.When it became apparent that he wasn't going to survive,Tyler's mom talked to him about death.She comforted him by telling Tyler that she was dying too,and that s he
8、 would be with him soon in heaven.
可怕的疾病最終還是拖垮了精力充沛得像臺(tái)小電動(dòng)機(jī)似的泰勒。他的病情越來(lái)越嚴(yán)重,不幸的是,身染艾滋病病毒的媽媽也病入膏肓。泰勒即將撒手人寰時(shí),媽媽和他談起死亡。她安慰他說(shuō),她也將要離開人世,不久會(huì)和他在天堂見(jiàn)面。
A few days before his death,Tyler beckoned me over to his hospital bed and whispered,“I might die soon.I'm not scared.When I die,please dress me in red.Mom promised she's coming to heaven,too.I'll be playing when she gets there,and I want to make sure she can find me.”
泰勒病逝前幾天,招呼我到他病床前,低聲對(duì)我說(shuō),“我可能就要死了,我不害怕。我死時(shí),請(qǐng)給我穿上紅色的衣服。媽媽答應(yīng)我她也會(huì)來(lái)天堂的。她來(lái)的時(shí)候我會(huì)在玩,我得保證她能找到我。”
