the two islands is Britain,which lies to the east of Ireland兩個(gè)島中較大的那個(gè)是不列顛,位于愛(ài)爾蘭的東面。(2) Wales lies to the west of England威爾士位于英格蘭的西邊。(3) England,the largest country in Britain,is in the southeast英格蘭,不列顛島上最大的一塊土地,位于這個(gè)島的東南部。(4) London lies on the River Themes倫敦位于泰晤士河畔。上述句子中的lie作“位于”、“在處”解,第(3)句中的is=lies。在lies后面可以跟to,on,in等不同的介詞,以表示“處于方向位置”。第(1)(2)句都用了介詞to表示方位,并不強(qiáng)調(diào)接壤。如果強(qiáng)調(diào)交界,則應(yīng)該用介詞on。第(3)句中的in表示“在境內(nèi)”,“在范圍之內(nèi)”。第(4)句中的on表示“在河畔”。例如:Guangdong lies to the south of Hubei廣東在湖北以南。Guangdong lies toon the south of Hunan廣東在湖南以南。(既可以用 to表示方位,又可用on表示兩省接壤)Shanghai lies in the east of China上海位于中國(guó)的東部。Nanjing lies on the Yangtze start快點(diǎn),他們就要出發(fā)了。3Generally, the weather in Britain is neither too cold in winter nor too hot in summer一般來(lái)說(shuō),不列顛的氣候冬天不太冷,夏天不太熱。neither.nor是一個(gè)連詞詞組,作“既不也不”講,用來(lái)連接兩個(gè)相同的成分。例如:We had neither money nor food我們既沒(méi)錢(qián),又沒(méi)食物。(連接兩個(gè)賓語(yǔ))They neither smoke nor drink他們既不吸煙,也不喝酒。(連接兩個(gè)謂語(yǔ))He was neither clever nor stupid, but good enough at his work他不聰明,也不傻,但在工作上還是夠好的。(連接兩個(gè)表語(yǔ))Neither the Scots nor the Welsh regard themselves as must not go hungry不要讓孩子挨餓。在go后還跟與顏色有關(guān)的形容詞。例如:He went red with anger when he heard the news他聽(tīng)到這個(gè)消息,氣得臉都紅了。bee,get,go,grow這幾個(gè)詞作連系動(dòng)詞時(shí),都可以表示“變成”,但也有些區(qū)別:bee較正式, get和go較口語(yǔ)化。此外bee和get可由好變壞,也可由壞變好,而go通常是由好變壞。例如:The situation has bee even betterworse情況變得更好糟了。They are getting richer and richerpoorer and poorer他們?cè)絹?lái)越富了窮了。grow作“變成”時(shí),有“逐漸變成新的狀態(tài)”的意思。例如:My younger brother is growing tall我的弟弟漸漸長(zhǎng)高了。5Tens of thousands of people died of hunger數(shù)以萬(wàn)計(jì)的人餓死了。die of的意思是“因而死”,常表示由于疾病、饑餓、年老、情感等原因引起的死亡。例如:He died of old age他壽終正寢了。In a cold winter,many wild animals may die of hunger在嚴(yán)寒的冬天,很多野生動(dòng)物可能餓死。The old woman died of grief soon after her husbands death那位老太太在丈夫去世后不久因悲傷而死。die from的意思是“因而死”,但一般指因疾病或感情以外的原因而造成的死亡,例如:He died from a chest wound他因胸部受傷而死。We felt sad at his death because he died from overwork我們對(duì)他的死感到悲傷,他是因過(guò)度工作累死的。6Although many families became separated,people still kept in touch with each other 雖然許多家庭都分散了,但是人們還是保持著聯(lián)系。keep in touch with是“與某人保持聯(lián)系”。例如:Please keep in touch with me when you are abroad你在國(guó)外期間請(qǐng)同我保持聯(lián)系。A good teacher should always keep in touch with the students好老師應(yīng)當(dāng)經(jīng)常和同學(xué)接觸。此外還有“get in touch with”是“與某人取得聯(lián)系”。例如:We must try to get in touch with Jack and ask him to e back我們必須設(shè)法同杰克取得聯(lián)系,要他回來(lái)。7Today,life has improved for the population,although many farmers in the west con-tinue to lead a simple life盡管(愛(ài)爾蘭)西部還有許多農(nóng)民繼續(xù)過(guò)著簡(jiǎn)樸的生活,但是就整個(gè)人口來(lái)說(shuō),今天的生活已經(jīng)有了改善。lead alife是“過(guò)的生活”,在life前可用不同的形容詞來(lái)修飾。例如:Kao Yubao and his family led a miserable life in the old days高玉寶和他的全家過(guò)去過(guò)著悲慘的生活。We have led a better life since 1978自從1978年以來(lái)我們的生活過(guò)得好些了。Though they are old,they lead an active life雖然他們年老了,但是他們生活得很活躍。8Most Irish people go to church every Sunday and the church plays an important partin peoples lives大部分愛(ài)爾蘭人每個(gè)星期天都去做禮拜,教會(huì)在人們生活中起著重要的作用。1)go to church的意思是“做禮拜”,church前不用冠詞the,指(教堂的)禮拜,不指具體的教堂。如果要指去某個(gè)教堂,就要用the,例如:Im going to the church near the station我打算去車(chē)站附近的那座教堂。這里不一定有“做禮拜”的含義了,也許是去找牧師談話(huà)或其他的事情。類(lèi)似的 還有:go to school去上學(xué),go to bed去睡覺(jué),go to prison去坐牢2)play a part in作“在中起作用”講,在 part前可用不同的形容詞來(lái)修飾,例如:Young people played an active part in revolutionary work年輕人在革命工作中起過(guò)積極的作用。Weather plays a significant part in agriculture氣候在農(nóng)業(yè)中起著重要的作用。The part that the church
