She stared at the blank screen and the blinking cursor. She rummaged around in her backpack for a rubber band, and then she pulled her hair into a thick ponytail. Paloma looked at the puter screen. It was still blank. She sighed and flipped through her notebook to reread the assignment Mr. Molina had given the class three weeks ago. It was due in just two days, and Paloma knew that she couldnt procrastinate any longer. Write a creative short story using an experience that you have had recently, Paloma read. Your story should include two examples of figurative language. Paloma and her family had recently taken a trip along North Carolinas coast. They had visited four different lighthouses, and Paloma wondered what it would be like to live in a lighthouse. She knew that before lighthouses were automated, they were run by a lighthouse keeper who lived on the premises. Paloma thought shed love to be a lighthouse keeper. Without thinking about it any longer, Paloma began to write the story. I sat with my cat Sadie curled on my lap and looked out the window at the crashing waves. The heavy rain beat against my lighthouse like a thousand footsteps racing up and down the walls. I held Sadie closer, and she let out a small meow of displeasure. I knew that the ing storm could not be too dangerous if Sadie was still acting normally. I had read that animals can sense changes in weather and will seek shelter from a tornado or hurricane. I was relying on Sadies calmness to get me through my first hurricane on the island. I knew that my lighthouse was sturdily built. It had survived more than one hundred years worth of hurricanes and tropical storms. There was no reason to believe that it couldnt survive another. I looked up at the staircase that spiraled above me and worried as I felt the tower sway slightly in a gust of wind. Paloma stopped and reread what she had just written. She smiled to herself in delight, saved her story, and then settled into her chair to continue writing. She wasnt sure what was going to happen next, but she knew that if she kept going, the story would continue to tell itself. Paloma couldnt wait to find out where it would take her. 語篇解讀:本文是一篇記敘文,講述了Paloma因完不成寫作任務(wù)而苦惱不已時,她和家人的一趟旅行給了她寫作的靈感。 4.Why is Paloma feeling anxious at the beginning of the passage? A.Her cat. B.Her teacher. C.Her trip. A.By listening to the weather report. B.By watching the crashing waves. C.By observing the cats behaviour. However, it is really true and simple. The sense of humor, laughter and play plays an important part in keeping you healthy. Treat the blues with a sense of humor, which is closely tied to laughter. Laughter is infectious. Have you ever heard a big laugh of a young child and been able to keep yourself from smiling? When laughter is shared between people, it makes them closer to each other and increases their happiness. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and a smile is also just as infectious as laughter is. You can experience something by smiling at everyone around you, and you will feel happier just by sharing a smile, even with a stranger. Play is an important part of making sure that we stay healthy. We are often encouraged to make sure our children play, and are told of the benefits of being out playing. However, what we often forget is that it is just as important for old people to make play be part of their life as its for children. Physical play is important for the old and it certainly helps prevent illness. While the studies are still in the early stages, the studies that have been done have shown that physical play certainly plays a part in preventing cognitive (認知的) falling. Anyway, adding humor, laughter, and play to our life will influence us mentally, physically and socially and bring us many advantages. So we should make full use of humor, laughter and play to make our life more active, more interesting and happier. 語篇解讀:本文是一篇說明文,主要介紹了幽默、大笑和玩耍給人們的健康帶來的好處。 8.What does the underlined word “infectious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? Newers may be anxious because they dont speak the language. Neither do they know the customs nor understand the peoples behavior in daily life. Quite often the visitor finds that “yes” may not always means “yes”, that friendliness does not necessarily mean friendship, or that statements that appear to be serious are really intended as jokes. The foreigners may be unsure as to when to shake hands, when to start conversations, or how to approach a stranger. The idea of culture shock helps explain the feelings of puzzlement and confusion. Language problems do not account for all the setback that people feel. When one has lost everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system, knowing how to register for university classes, or knowing how to make friends, difficulties in coping with the new society may arise. When an individual enters a strange culture, he or she feels like a fish out of water. Newers feel at times that they do not belong to the culture and feel deserted by the native members of the culture. When this happens, visitors may want to reject everything about the new environment and may glorify and sing their own praises of the positive aspects of their own culture. On the other side, more visitors may sneeze at their native country by rejecting its value and instead choosing to approve of the value of the new country. This may occur as an attempt to accept the new culture in order to be taken in by the people in it. 語篇解讀:本文是一篇議論文,主要論述了文化沖擊現(xiàn)象發(fā)生的原因、現(xiàn)象、結(jié)果等。 12.What do people feel when they are abruptly in a new culture? A.its impossible to get used to a new culture B.people feel confused due to culture shock C.foreigners often dont mean what native people say D.most foreigners are usually quite humorous 解析:選B 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段最后兩句“The foreigners may be unsure as to when to shake hands, when to start conversations, or how to approach a stranger. A.the language B.the transportation C.the environment D.the puzzlement 解析:選A 細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第一段第二句“Newers may be anxious because they dont speak the language”并結(jié)合常識可知,在別的國家,人們遇到的最大問題就是語言不通。故A項正確。 15.A few immigrants say no to everything of the new country because ________. A.they miss their native culture seriously B.they know nothing about the culture C.they cant enter the mainstream society D.they really regret having immigrated 解析:選B 推理判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段中的“Newers feel at times that they do not belong to the culture and feel deserted ... praises of the positive aspects of their own culture”可以判斷,由于對新文化一無所知,新來的一些移民常常會拒絕新的國家中的一切,故B項正確。 Ⅱ.閱讀七選五 (2019日照校際學(xué)校聯(lián)考)The word “pub” is short for public house.
