B Two days after his 95th birthday, Norwood Thomas jumped out of a plane at Skydive (跳傘) Suffolk. And, according to Skydive Suffolk, Thomas set the record for the oldest person to jump with the organization! “I’m proud to be the oldest, and it makes me feel good,” said Thomas. With an instructor, he jumped from about 14,000 feet. The record Thomas broke wasn’t long-standing. Earlier the month, a 93-year-old woman took to the skies. She and Thomas have military ties: Thomas as a World War II soldier and the woman as a Gold Star mom whose son died in Afghanistan. Thomas, who now lives in Virginia Beach, began jumping from planes as a soldier in the 101st Airborne Division, also known as the Screaming Eagles. He was one of the 18,000 soldiers who landed in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. However, that was only from 400 feet. As the years passed, Thomas didn’t jump again. But before his 88th birthday, he came up with a list. That was the No. 1 thing-to jump out of an airplane again. The elder Thomas jumped in 2013, but didn’t after that because he had something wrong with his kidney(腎臟). As he prepared with cameras recording his every move, Thomas didn’t look nervous. He looked like he belonged. Walking down the runway, he smiled at the fans cheering him. Steve, Thomas’ son, said, “Skydiving gives my father a purpose for being. And it is where old men can e back and be boys again”. Norwood Thomas landed safely. Besides having small injuries to his ears and hand, Thomas felt OK. “It’s an exciting experience like always,” he said. “I was enjoying the views. When you’re up there looking down on the world, it’s beautiful. It’s feeling you don’t get unless you get up there.” 4. What’s the text mainly about? A. An old man who broke the skydiving record in Suffolk as the oldest. B. The oldest former soldier who served in World War II. C. A former soldier who lost his son in Afghanistan. D. An old couple who both love skydiving. 5. What’s Steve’s attitude toward his father’s skydiving? A. He doesn’t care about it. B. He supports it. C. He is against it. D. He is worried about it. 6. According to the text, we can learn that Thomas ________. A. wants to challenge himself once again B. encourages people to try skydiving C. thinks highly of this skydiving D. felt frightened at the beginning of this skydiving C We all know the saying, “Nobody is perfect.” It has been planted in our brains since we were children, and of course, it is the truth. So if nobody is perfect, why do we have such a hard time admitting when we are in trouble or need help? Like many other young people trying to get through their first year of college, I felt anxiety, and it had its grips on me pretty tight. It began getting in the way of my life, and I had to sit down and tell myself that my behavior was not healthy and there was a solution. Finally, I decided to turn to therapy(精神療法). Therapy. It has such a negative stigma (污名), but why? Does going to therapy mean that you are failing as a person or that you cannot fix your problems on your own? No. Going to therapy means that you are strong enough to recognize that something inside your head is not working correctly, and you are brave enough to try to fix it. After a couple of weeks, many parts of my life became so much clearer. I began to understand that I, myself, am my worst enemy, which was pretty frightening. But, although frightened, I knew that it was only I who could guide me towards feeling better, and that was extremely empowering. I have been guided towards a healthier mindset, one that is positive and powerful. I have been able to understand that no matter what happens in my life. I will always be okay. A lot of people do not understand that it is normal to have negative feelings and sometimes to feel like we have lost control over certain parts of our lives. Seeing a therapist can greatly change your way of thinking about something if you keep your mind open and I am so thankful that I decided to go and do something for myself. If you are in need of help, you can go to therapy and then everything will be okay. 7. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Anxiety greatly influenced the author. B. Anxiety encouraged the author to change. C. The author couldn’t deal with the college life. D. The author had no idea what to do. 8. In the author’s opinion, going to therapy ________. A. means you are failing as a person B. you’re not brave enough to solve your problems C. can make others think wrongly about you D. can be quite necessary and helpful 9. After a couple of weeks, how did the author react? A. She became more positive and confident. B. She became too frightened of her own life. C. She became worried about her anxiety. D. She realized college was her worst enemy. 10. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To tell us how to think positively. B. To show it is OK to be imperfect. C. To help us know better about therapy. D. To share her college life with us. 第二節(jié) (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分) 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 We are told that “a family that eats together stays together”. We even follow it by making the whole family sit in front of the television while eating, right? Wrong. Television does nothing to help make the family relationships better. 11 It’s thus better to give the TV a break and to sit at the dinner table. Family dinners need another important part-conversations that bring in a pleasant atmosphere. It often serves well to start the conversation right before dinner so that setting the table and doing other chores may bee less boring. 12 As a result, there are no embarrassing moments when people are actually eating. Also, you can change the topic if you feel that it might start arguments. Children aren’t usually very good at sharing information and don’t know how to reply when you ask them questions like “How was your school today?” 13 For this, you can ask them about the after-class activities that they might be taking part in. 14 Therefore, all controversial (有爭議的) topics should be avoided. Actually, if you have had a funny incident in your day at the work, share it with others. What’s more, it serves well if you share your childhood memories with your family. 15 In a word, it is always important to choose the right topics for the family dinner conversations A. Try to know more about them than just their school life. B. It’s often difficult to start a conversation at a family dinner. C. But try to keep in mind some family dinner conversation ideas. D. Doing things together can make family members feel interested. E. In fact, it only increases the distance between members of the family. F. They, especially your kids, will feel excited to hear about what you did as a child. G. Conversations during dinnertime should encourage family members to eat well. One of the easiest things in the world is to bee a fault-finder. However, life can be 16 when you are not busy finding fault with it. Several years ago I 17 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 18 by things. People were always doing things that annoyed her, and 19 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 20 person. Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 21 . Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. It wasn’t until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 26 her habit of finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 27 everything so harshly(刻薄). She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 28 as well. Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme at fault-finding, 29 when we’re honest, we can be sharply 30 of the world. I’m not suggesting you 31 problems, or that you pretend things are 32 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are — 33 most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big 34 . Train yourself to “bite your tongue”, and with a little 35 , you’ll get really good at letting things go. And when you do, you’ll get back your enthusiasm and love for life. 16. Recently, people have had a heated discussion about whether students should make friends on-line. Different people hold different opinions. Some of them agree with the opinion. The reasons are as follows: first, we can make more friends with others on the Internet. Second, We can express our ideas freely. Besides, making friends on line can contribute to learning English. However, others are against the opinion. The reason why they disagree is that they think it is a waste of time to make friends on line and has a bad effect on study. What’s more, students are likely to be taken in on line . As far as I’m concerned, students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us.- 1.請仔細(xì)閱讀文檔,確保文檔完整性,對于不預(yù)覽、不比對內(nèi)容而直接下載帶來的問題本站不予受理。
