Around the world, kids have different childhoods, but many of them share one thing—the fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson. April 2, 1805 is the birthday of the great Danish writer. People also celebrate it as International Children’s Book Day. Anderson was born in a poor family in Odense, Denmark. He began to write when he was 17, and published his first successful book of fairy tales in 1835. From then on, he wrote one book almost every year for another 37 years. “I have a lot of material,” said Anderson. “It often seems to me as if every little flower is talking to me.” In his life, Anderson wrote hundreds of fairy tales, and his stories have been translated into over 150 languages. His stories teach children many things about life and people. For example, the story The Ugly Ducking teaches children not to judge others by their appearances. Other stories show Anderson’s care for the poor, such as The Little Match Girl, which is about a dying little girl’s dreams and hopes. Anderson’s stories have influenced millions of children.
