But what about sharing time to raise children together? In Ningbo city of Zhejiang province in East China, young mothers in the same neighborhood pool their children together, and share the responsibility of being parents. Spending every day together, but not families – in this coastal city of East China, three mothers are trying a new way of raising their kids, by pooling them together. Among the mothers are both office workers and housewives. They say they do so not just because of the tight schedule. Jiujiu’s mother said, “By kids pooling, we mean to create an opportunity for the kids to spend time together so that we can observe our kids, learn more about them. And then we can discuss how to better bring them up.” The three families have been doing so for two years, in school days and holidays. Their children have grown used to each other’s pany. Chichi’s mother said, “My son was a bit shy. We’ve been talking him to be more active, but he hardly changed. After joining the kids pool, suddenly we found him willing to municate with others now. When we are not there, he has to rely on himself to get along with his pals.” Generally, mothers speak highly about the pooling. The mothers describe the pooling as bringing the running water into a closed pond. It opens a window to a different world for both kids and parents. But there are moments when opinions differ. Xiaoxiao’s mother said, “Sex education for example. Kids will be curious about it when they reach a certain age. Personally I want to talk with my child about it, frankly and sincerely. But the other two moms think it better not to bring it up.” Xiaoxiao’s mother says her solution is to share some parenting guidebooks with other mothers and let them make the decision. The headmaster of the kindergarten believes such pooling activities test not only children, but also the parents. Jin Hongqing, kindergarten headmaster said, “Parents need to be tolerant and patient. D When an ant dies, other ants take it out of the nest, often within an hour after its death. This behavior interests scientists and they wonder how ants know for sure — and so soon — that another ant is dead. One scientist recently came up with a way to explain this ant behavior. Dong-Hwan Choe is a biologist, a scientist who studies animals and plants. He found that ants have a chemical on the outside of their bodies that signals to other ants, “I’m dead — take me away” when it is dead. But there’s a question to answer: As we know, if an ant is dead, it stops moving. But when an ant is sleeping or knocked unconscious, it is also not moving. However, other ants don’t move the living ant out of the nest. How do they know this ant is not dead? Choe found that ants have another chemical on their bodies, which tells nearby ants something like, “Wait — I’m not dead yet” when it is not dead. Choe suspects that when an ant dies, the chemical that says, “Wait I’m not dead yet” quickly goes away. When other ants detect the “dead” chemical without the “not dead yet” chemical, they move away the body. To test his theory, Choe and his team put different chemicals on ants. When the scientists used the “I’m dead” chemical, other ants quickly moved the treated ant away. When the scientists used the “Wait — I’m not dead yet” chemical, other ants left the treated ant alone. Choe believes this behavior shows that the “not dead yet” chemical overrides the “dead” chemical when picked up by other ants. And that when an ant dies, the “not dead yet” chemical fades away. Other nearby ants then detect the remaining “dead” chemical and remove the body from the nest. Understanding this behavior can help scientists figure out how to stop ants from invading new places and causing problems. 67. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. E In the United States 84 colleges now accept just women. Most of them were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some womens colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular again. The president of Trinity College in Washington, D. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a womens college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in womens college a higher percentage of students studies mathematics than in a college with both men and women. Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a womens college, women feel freer to say what they think. Womens schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women are represented everywhere. For example, at a womens college every evening, office is held by a woman. Recent studies reportedly show that American women who went to Womens colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life. 71. Most of womens colleges were established ____________.
