Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body, I also had to deal with my parents bitter divorce, a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded town. When we moved, my beloved panion, a small brown pony had to be sold. I was heartbroken and terribly lonely. I couldnt eat or sleep and cried all the time. Finally, realizing how much I missed my pony, my father bought me another horse, Cowboy. Cowboy was without doubt the ugliest horse in the world. But I didnt care. I loved him beyond all reasons. I joined a riding club. When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse was judged by appearance, we were quickly ”shown the gate”. I knew nothing could turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to pete would be in the timed speed events. I chose the jumping race. For the whole next month we practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home, totally exhausted. All of our hard work didnt make me feel confident by the time the show came. One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. I sat at the gate and sweated all out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the court and finish in first place. My turn finally came. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped over it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line. No cheers filled the air. The end of our run was met with surprised silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds. I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, Id always e out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. I can be the owner of my fate.24. Why did the author like Cowboy so much in spite of its ugliness?A. Because she loved horses more than anything else.B. Because Cowboy was a strong and smart young horse.C. Because Cowboy had a lot in mon with her pony.D. Because she was sad and lonely and needed a panion.25. The audience fell into silence at the end of the run probably because_.A. they didnt expect Cowboy would win the eventB. they were unhappy that Becky was beaten in the eventC. they didnt like cowboy, for it was too uglyD. they never saw a horse running as fast as Cowboy26. After the petition, the author came to realize that _.A. she ought to gather the courage to solve all the problemsB. it was time to forget her pony and treat Cowboy betterC. she needed to work harder to win more blue ribbonsD. she could be the god of her own fate if she tried hard enough27. It can be inferred from the story that _.A. all of their hard training was totally in vainB. a blue ribbon must be the second highest prizeC. Cowboy lost in the event of being judged by appearanceD. both Becky and the author won in the jumping eventC We know that hugs make us feel easy inside. And this feeling could actually ward off stress and protect the immune (免疫) system, according to a new research from Carnegie Mellon University. Its a well-known fact that stress can weaken the immune system. In this study, the researchers sought to determine whether hugs could protect individuals from the increased sensitivity to illness brought on by the particular stress that es with interpersonal conflict. “We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression and anxiety, ” the studys lead author, psychologist Dr. Sheldon Cohen , said in a statement. “We have tested whether awareness of social support is equally effective in protecting us from sensitivity to infection caused by stress and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feelings of support and thus protect a person against infection.” In the experiment, over 400 healthy adults filled out a questionnaire about their perceived (感知到的) social support and also participated in a nightly phone interview for two weeks. They were asked about the frequency that they engaged in interpersonal conflict and received hugs that day. Then, the researchers exposed the participants to a mon cold virus, and monitored them to assess signs of infection. They found that both perceived social support and more frequent hugs reduced the risk of infection associated with experiencing interpersonal conflict. Regardless of whether or not they experienced social conflicts, infected participants with greater perceived social support and more frequent hugs had less severe illness symptoms. “This suggests that being hugged by a trusted person may act as an effective means of conveying support and that increasing the frequency of hugs might be an effective means of reducing the effects of stress,” Cohen said. “The apparent protective effect of hugs may result from the physical contact itself or hugging being a behavioral indicator of support and closeness. Either way, those who receive more hugs are somewhat more protected from infection.” If you need any more reason to wrap your arms around someone special, consider this: hugs also lower blood pressure, reduce fears, improve heart health and decrease feelings of loneliness.28. We love to look at one, but Jolanda Blackwell wanted her eighth-graders to really think about it and question. So Blackwell had her students watch a video of a sunset as part of a physics lesson on motion. “I asked them: So what s moving And why Blackwell says. Some thought the sun was moving ; others knew that a sunset is the result of the Earth spinning around on its axis. Usually, my biggest challenge is trying to keep them patient, she says. They just have so many burning questions. Every day, we meet new information, says Charan Ranganath, a psychologist. Ranganath was curious to know why we keep some information and forget other things. So he got 19 volunteers and asked them to review more than 100 questions. When the participants curiosity was aroused, the parts of their brains that regulate pleasure and reward lit up. Curious minds also showed increased activity in the brain, which is involved in greater memories. Curious brains are better at learning not only about the subject at hand but also dull information. This is a phenomenon teachers can use in the classroom, says Evie Malaia, a professor. Say a kid wants to be an astronaut, she says. NL Well, how do you link that goal with learning multiplication tables(乘法表) A teacher may choose to ask her class an interesting word problem that involves space exploration, Malaia says. Students may remember the answer to the word problem, but theyll also remember how they found the answer through multiplication. What Ranganath wants to know most is why some people seem naturally more curious than others. Lots of factors, including stress, aging and certain drugs affect dopamine(多巴胺) processing in the brain. If we could figure these things out, we could help those who may just seem bored, Ranganath says. Blackwell says she doesn t have to deal with that problem too often. She says her studentslove exploring the mysterious unknowns in science: What happens when a car crashes How do rainbows work I tell my kids there s no dumb questions, Blackwell says. That s science: asking questions and seeking answers. 32. What challenge did Blackwell have in class?A. The students were often burnt by accident.B. The students were asking too many questions.C.
