Whillans, a professor at HBS said, “Buying time helps to protect us from the stress in our lives caused by time pressure, and the feeling that we don’ t have enough minutes in the day to plete our tasks.’’ The effect was clearest in the Canadian experiment, in which 60 working adults were given $40 to spend in two different ways. One weekend, they were told to spend the money on a material purchase—a gift for themselves. The next weekend, they were instructed to spend the $40 on anything that saved them time, from paying the neighbor’s kid to run errands (跑腿) to taking a Uber instead of a bus. “On the day they made the time-saving purchase, they felt happier, in a better mood, and lower feelings of time stress than on the day they bought a material purchase” said Whillans. The biggest surprise to the researchers was how few people would spend money on time-saving services. When they asked 98 working adults how they would spend a “windfall” of $40, only two percent named a purchase that would save them time. “One reason,’’ said Whillans, “is that we’re very bad at remembering how much we hate doing certain tasks once the suffering has passed. That makes us less likely to take active steps to avoid that over burdened feeling in the future.” But another possible cause is good old-fashioned guilt. “If you feel guilty about getting someone to clean your house for you, then you might get less happiness from outsourcing that task,” said Whillans, or you might just be less likely to spend your money in that way. ’’ 1.In the Canadian experiment, the participants__________. University of Bradford researchers announced they had discovered about 100 stones covering several acres thought to have been built around 4,500 years ago. The Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project discovered the monument, which is near Durrington Walls, also known as “ superhenge”. Stonehenge, which is believed to have been pleted 3,500 years ago, is about 2 miles away. "What we are starting to see is the largest surviving stone monument, preserved underneath a bank, that has ever been discovered in Britain and possibly in Europe,” said Vince Gaffney. The evidence was found under 3 feet of earth. Some of the stones are thought to have stood 15 feet tall before they were toppled. "Our radar data have shown an amazing row of up to 90 standing stones, a number of which have survived after being pushed over, and a large bank placed over the stones," said professor Wolfgang Neubauer, director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology. “ In the east,up to 30 stones ... have survived below,” he said. “The extraordinary scale and details of the evidence produced by the Stonehenge Hidden Landscapes Project, which the new discoveries at Durrington Walls, is changing fundamentally(根本上) our understanding of Stonehenge and the world around it," Neubauer added. "Everything written before about the Stonehenge landscape and the ancient monuments within it will need to be rewritten,” said Paul Garwood, a scientist and lead historian on the project at the University of Birmingham. The findings were announced on the first day of the British Science Festival being held at the University of Bradford. 1.It is believed that the superhenge is _________earlier than the Stonehenge. While it is also rich in water resources, its fresh water per person accounts of only a quarter of the world’s per capita(人均). Better still, water resources are unevenly distributed in China, for most fresh water concentrate in its south whereas there is only 1/4 as much in the north. Beside water scarcity in China, there is another serious problem: water pollution. Over the past decades, more than 80% of surface and ground water has polluted as a result of uncontrol discharge of industrial wastes. The consequence is that over half of the six hundred cities throughout the county are short of water supply, of that one hundred and eight are already very thirsty. For this reason, we must heighten our aware of water protection and make greater efforts to protect the environment, or else the last drop of the water on earth would be our teardrop. 細(xì)節(jié)理解題:根據(jù)The effect was clearest in the Canadian experiment,in which 60 working adults were given $40 to spend in two different ways.可知,在加拿大的這個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)中,參加實(shí)驗(yàn)的人被要求用不同的方式花錢(qián).故選D. 2.細(xì)節(jié)理解題. 根據(jù) On the day they made the time-saving purchase, they felt happier, in a better mood, and lower feelings of time stress than on the day they bought a material purchase可知,花錢(qián)雇用別人打掃花園的人時(shí)間壓力更少些。故選C。 3.細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù) The biggest surpriseto the researchers was how few people would spend money on time-saving services.可知選B。 4.詞義猜測(cè)題。根據(jù)“One reason,” said Whillans,“ is that we’re very bad at remembering how much we hate doing certain tasks once the suffering has passed.
