Now,a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee,it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer. Dr Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the connection between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, “So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didnt really have any expectation of which direction it could go into.” To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical(統(tǒng)計學的) techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies. She explained,“Thanks to the earlier studies, we have a lot more power than earlier studies that looked at this. And we included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the mouth and throat. And then 9,000 controls, people who do not have cancer.” Those studies in Europe and the United States found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat. “We saw 4 cups of coffee per day,”Hashibe said, “This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We did not see the same effect for drinking three cups or less per day.” Mia Hashibe said there was a weak connection between cancer risk and drinking coffee without caffeine. And she and her assistants found no proof that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers. “There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants(抗氧化物) in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps they are playing some sort of protective role against several cancers.” 36.This passage is probably taken from ________. A.a(chǎn) literature book B.a(chǎn) travel journal C.a(chǎn)n old directory D.a(chǎn) medical magazine 37.Dr Hashibe expected nothing of her research because ________. A.it was impossible to get the desired result B.the research was much surprising in fact C.no conclusions had been reached before D.the research team lacked faith in success 38.What do we know about Dr Mia Hashibe and her research? A.She knew for sure how coffee may affect drinkers. B.She included 4,000 people without cancer in study. C.She found an effect for three cups of coffee a day. D.She based her research on several earlier studies. 39.What would be the best title for the text? A.Drinking Coffee May Protect Some Cancers B.Drinking Coffee May Prevent Some Cancers C.Drinking Coffee May Cure Some Cancers D.Drinking Coffee May Cause Some Cancers B I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did. My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money. The worst is yet to e. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, Im now trying to bring up my three children. Im filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world. 40.From the passage we can learn that the writers mother was ________. A.not generous at all B.very strict with her children C.very mean with money matters D.very cruel to her children 41.Which of the following things did the writer hate to do most? A.Eating differently from other kids. B.Wearing clean clothes made by mother. C.Going to bed early and getting up early. D.Letting mother know where they were. 42.It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A.the writer worked hard and usually got good grades in studies B.mother was punished for breaking the Child Labor Law C.a(chǎn)ll the other kids studied better than the writer D.the writers family lived a miserable life 43.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A.Mother practised economy in running her home. B.The writer is very thankful for her mother. C.The writer is severe with her children when bringing them up. D.The writer has a deep hatred for her mother. C Surface Exploration. Robots make great explorers on planets, moons, and other landing areas. Aside from the Earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand. Plus there would be plications with radiation, weather, and a lack of gravity. Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions. Data Collection. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data. Robots are also able to perform many tasks at a time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently. Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water are all performed more quickly and accurately (精確地) by robots. Cost Effective. The use of robots have made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work. In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end. Robots never plain, they dont require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break. Space Travel. Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space. Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars history. 44.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A.The use of robots in space exploration cost more than the use of humans. B.It may be dangerous for humans to explore the solar system except the Earth. C.Both the Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water in the Mars. D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully. 45.The underlined word “withstand” most probably means “________”. A.a(chǎn)rise B.bear C.defeat D.diverse 46.What is the writers attitude in writing this passage? A.Negative. B.Persuasive. C.Subjective. D.Objective. D The European Union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animal cloning for food production, while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring(后代) of clones from the United States and elsewhere. The report from the European mission followed a call by EU lawmakers in July for a total ban on food derived from cloned animals and their traditionally bred offspring, citing ethical concerns over the industrial production of cloned meat. The mission said a temporary fiveyear EU ban on cloning for food production was justified on animal welfare grounds, but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade. “Food from cloned animals is safe. In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare,” EU Health and Consumer missioner John Dalli told reporters. Food derived from the offspring of clones presents no such animal welfare issues, and banning its sale and import would be impossible because the origin is untraceable, Dalli said. “Such a prohibition would lead to a ban of imports of any food of animal origin (meat, milk and processed products) from third countries allowing the cloning technique,” the report said. “Were not going to regulate for the world,” Dalli added. But animal welfare groups criticized the missions decision, saying it had bowed to pressure from third countries. “We do not accept the missions position that it would be impossible to enforce a ban that includes the offspring of cloned animals, as (other) meat traceability systems are already in place,” said Sonja Van Tichelen, director of the Eurogroup for Animals. 47.From the passage we can infer the ban is ________. A.justified B.wele C.controversial D.meaningless 48.The text is most probably a ________. A.news report B.book review C.newspaper ad D.science fiction story 49.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The ban is permanent. B.The imports of food from the offspring of clones are not banned. C.Animal welfare groups support the ban. D.The ban has been into effect. 50.What might be the most suitable title for the passage? A.The plans of the European Union B.A temporary fiveyear EU ban C.EU proposes ban on animal cloning for food D.The danger of food derived from cloned animals 第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分) 根據(jù)短文內容,從短文后的七個選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。 It is now possible to watch live sport on television on any day of the week, and the current amount of reporting will undoubtedly increase further in years to e.
