閱讀理解提升練(二) A On a warm Monday,Jenny Neilson bought a sandwich and parked her car under some trees.Rolling down the windows to let in fresh air,she settled back to enjoy her lunch.Suddenly she noticed a big bald man running through the parking lot. Before she came to realize what would happen, the man was there, shouting through her window,“Get out!” Neilson refused. Pulling open her door, the man seized her by the neck and hair, and threw her out of the car onto the ground. She screamed, grabbing her purse and the keys. Two reporters of the local newspaper,Robert Bruce and Jeff Jackson, just outside their office building on a break, heard the screams and began running. When they reached Neilson’s car,the attacker had jumped into the driver’s seat and was madly searching for the keys.Bruce opened the door, and he and Jackson dragged the man out.The attacker fought back. But even in his cornered panic,he was no match for the two athletic men. Reggie Miller,a worker of the local newspaper, heard the screams, too. He rushed back to the office to phone the police, and then ran back with some plastic ropes—used to tie up newspapers. With his arms tied tight behind him,the prisoner looked up and said coldly,“I hope you guys feel good about yourselves—you just caught one of the most wanted men.” They ignored him and waited for the police.Later,Bruce and Jackson were shocked to learn the man was the professional carjacker(劫車者)and suspected murderer, whose picture—but with a full head of hair—had been recently printed in their own newspaper. Neilson considers herself lucky though she suffered injuries. She believes the story might have had a different ending if those good people had not e to her aid.“Unfortunately,” she said,“many people would never have done what they did,and that is the real truth.” 1.The underlined word “bald” in Paragraph 1 most probably means . A.strong B.without hair C.ugly D.rude 2.Please arrange the time order of the following events according to the passage. a.Neilson was enjoying her lunch in the car. b.A man robbed Neilson of her car. c.The picture of the carjacker was printed in the local news paper. d.The carjacker was caught. A.abcd B.dbca C.cabd D.abdc 3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A.Neilson considers herself lucky because she was not badly hurt. B.Neilson doesn’t think many people will do the same as the three men. C.Neilson thinks everyone will do the same as the three men. D.Neilson has great confidence in people’s kindness and bravery. B (2018浙江高三壓軸考) Mention the word “coding” and the first image that es to mind is a plicated algorithm(運(yùn)算法則)that has no relationship to the real world. It is,therefore,no wonder that most kids avoid learning this skill that is being increasingly important in today’s world. Now,thanks to a small robot, even kids as young as five, will be demanding program.Root,a robot, can be accessed using an iPad.It has been designed to teach coding to kids at various levels. For beginners or young children,Root is less about coding but more about problem-solving. Kids can construct a “what if” situation by moving icons(圖標(biāo))around on the tablet and observing the consequences of their action instantly. This simple “cause and effect” logic can be used to teach the robot to “drive” along a vertical dry-erase whiteboard and quickly draw with a dry-erase marker.Root can also be instructed to move around the floor, draw patterns, and avoid barriers. As students get more fortable with the concept, they can download mands, meaning that Root can be told to draw a race track on a whiteboard, and then multiple Root robots can be instructed to race each other.Other fun options include programming Root to go faster when driving over the color green and ing to a stop upon sensing the color red. That’s just the beginning of the possibilities—Root can also be taught to flee when it detects danger, which in this case is the beam from a flashlight, and even play “Angry Birds” on a whiteboard using real-world physics.Since multiple Roots can be used at the same time, the robot is the perfect classroom tool to introduce coding to young kids. Raphael believes that this novel approach to coding will excite great interest because unlike the traditional method,Root makes coding fun for even the youngest of students.Unfortunately, the robot, successfully tested by kids in the laboratory,is not yet available for schools. The researchers estimate that Root will be sold for about $200,making it fairly affordable for anyone that wishes to learn how to code. 4.Why are kids afraid to learn to code according to the author? A.It is very difficult for them to learn this skill. B.It gets them more unfortable to use puters. C.Learning code will cost them a large sum of money. D.Kids find it will have less fun playing puter games. 5.The robot called Root helps kids to . A.change kids’ study attitudes B.move icons around more easily C.greatly improve kids’ test marks D.feel at ease when learning to code 6.What do we know about the robot? A.It teaches kids to code. B.It is used to design programs. C.It makes “Angry Birds” popular. D.It helps kids to break codes. C Filled with much housework, meals and childcare at home, many people feel that being at work sounds more like having a picnic.Even for those who have a happy family life, they feel actually more stressed at home than at work. Recently,a study carried out by the researchers at a university in the USA found lower levels of hormone(荷爾蒙) released in response to stress in a majority of subjects when they were at work pared to when they were at home. This was true for both men and women, and parents and people without children. Both men and women showed less stress at work. But women are more likely to report feeling happier there.Men were more likely to feel happier at home.Experts say there are other reasons why work is less stressful than home for many.“Paid work is more valued in society,”said Sarah Damaske, the lead researcher on the study.“Household work is boring and not particularly rewarding.” We get better at our job with time and the increased petence means less stress and more rewards.Yet none of us,no matter how long we’ve been doing it,ever truly feels like an expert at parenting or even at marriage. The support and friendship of co-workers also offer stress relief. At home, meanwhile, stress spreads and increases quickly.“That’s the reason why most housewives wish they were the bread earners,” Dr.Damaske says. Much of the advice to families and couples includes the warning to “l(fā)eave work stress at office” and even to change our mind-set from work to home, for example,a walk around the block. The recent findings, though, suggest our home life, not our attitude, might be due for some change. 7.According to Paragraph 1,many people feel that being at home . A.is like having a picnic B.is an ideal way to manage stress C.offers greater relaxation than at work D.can bring more stress than in the workplace 8.According to Sarah Damaske, . A.men feel happier at work than women B.parents without children tend to feel happier C.household work is not as rewarding as work on a job D.both men and women feel happier at home than at work 9.What can make people feel happy at work? A.Recognition of the value of their work. B.A good management of their marriage. C.Much petition among colleagues. D.Forgetting the stress from family life. 10.According to the recent findings, what should we change to solve the problem mentioned? A.Our attitude. B.Our home life. C.Our mind-set. D.Our working style. 故選A項(xiàng)。 由最后一段中的“Root makes coding fun for even the youngest of students”可知,該機(jī)器人可以使編碼成為非常有趣的事情。 由第一段中的“It has been designed to teach coding to kids at various levels.” 故選A項(xiàng)。 根據(jù)文章第三段 “‘Paid work is more valued in society,’ said Sarah Damaske, the lead researcher on the study.‘Household work is boring and not particularly rewarding.’” 故選A項(xiàng)。 根據(jù)文章最后一段“The recent findings, though, suggest our home life, not our attitude, might be due for some change.”
