He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs. Many of Gershwins songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible wayfrom jazz to country. In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazzz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to pose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that show time, he posed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The sudience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him worldfamous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study position(作曲) with the wellknown musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazzinfluenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics (評論家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works. George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirtynine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written. 1Many of Gershwins musical works were _.Awritten about New YorkersBposed for Paul Whiteman Cplayed mainly in the countrysideDperformed in various ways答案:D細節(jié)理解題。 2What do we know about the concert organized by Whiteman?AIt attracted more people to theatres. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music. Experts find that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked childrens IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial (空間的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fractions (分數(shù))Music is also used for medial purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memories. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas:the amygdale and hippocampus. Thats why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimers, listening to music can help unlock buried memories by strengthening musical pathways to memories. With the evidence of musics benefits, its no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems. People are recognizing that more than just a form of entertainment, music is also great for the brain. 6Scientists are studying music because _.Amusic can be used for medical treatmentsBmusic plays a very important role in our livesCour brains can process music in different waysDmusic education has received a lot of attention答案:B細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第一段第二句中的“It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study”可知,科學家們研究音樂是因為音樂在我們的生活中起著非常重要的作用。7According to the Canadian study, which children increased IQ scores?AThose who already had high IQ scores.BThose who always played music.CThose who could not play any instrument.DThose who studied music for a period of time. 根據(jù)第二段的第三句“One study in Canada tracked childrens IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements.” 8Which of the following is a kind of disease?ASpatial reasoning.BAlzheimers.CThe amygdale and hippocampus.DThe medial prefrontal cortex. 根據(jù)第三段第五句中的“For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimers”可知,Alzheimers是一種疾病,意為“早老性癡呆病”。spatial reasoning指“空間推理”;the amygdale and hippocampus是指大腦記憶存儲的兩個區(qū);the medial prefrontal cortex是指“內(nèi)側前額葉皮質”。9Which can be the best title for the text?AMusic and healthBMusic and the mindCMusic and educationDMusic and instruments答案:B標題判斷題。
