It has been announced that a et (彗星) is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our plant, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth. On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere(大氣層) with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the et lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are pletely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive. Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end? 66. What is mainly described in the passage? A. A historic discovery. B. An event of imagination. C. A research on space. D. A scientific adventure. 67. When the first piece hits the South Atlantic , it causes _____ A. an earthquake B. damages to cities C. an Earth explosion D. huge waves 68. Why can’t the northern half of the earth escape for long? A. Because the land is covered with water B. Because the light and heat from the sun can not reach the earth. C. Because people there can not live at the temperature of zero. D. Because wars break out among countries. 69. By giving the example of dinosaurs, the author tries to prove______ A. animals could not live in the cold climate B. what happened 65 million years ago was an invented story C. the human beings will die out in 2094 D. the Earth could be hit by other objects in space 70. We may guess that the writer is ______________. A. worried B. practical C. a scientist D. full of imagination B James Cleveland Owens was the son of a farmer and the grandson of black slaves. His family moved to Cleveland when he was 9. There, a school teacher asked the youth his name. “ J.C,” he replied. She thought he had said “Jesse”, and he had a new name. Owens ran his first race at age 13. After high school, he went to Ohio State University. He had to work part time so as to pay for his education. As a second-year student, in the Big Ten games in 1935, he set even more records than he would in the Olympic Games a year later. A week before the Big Ten meet, Owens accidentally fell down a flight of stairs. His back hurt so much that he could not exercise all week, and he had to be helped in and out of the car that drove him to the meet. He refused to listen to the suggestions that he give up and said he would try, event by event. He did try, and the results are in the record book. The stage was set for Owen’s victory at the Olympic Games in Berlin the next year, and his success would e to be regarded as not only athletic(體育的) but also political. Hitler did not congratulate any of the African-American winners. “It was all right with me,” he said years later. “I didn’t go to Berlin to shake hands with him, anyway.” Having returned from Berlin, he received no telephone call form the president of his own country, either. In fact, he was not honored by the United States until 1976, four years before his death. Owens’ Olympic victories made little difference to him. He earned his living by looking after a school playground, and accepted money to race against cars, trucks, motorcycles, and dogs. “Sure, it bothered(煩擾) me,” he said later. “But at least it was an honest living. I had to eat.” In time, however, his gold medals(獎(jiǎng)牌) changed his life. “They have kept me alive over the years,” he once said. “Time has stood still for me. That golden moment dies hard.” 71. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. Jesse Owens, a Great American Athlete B. Golden moment—a Life-time struggle C. Making a Living as a Sportsman D. How to Be a Successful Athlete? C Yorkshire, England was the setting for two great novels of the 19th century. These were Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The youngest sister Anne, was also a gifted novelist, and her books have the same extraordinary quality as her sisters’. Their father was Patrick Bronte, born in Ireland. He moved with his wife Maria Bronte and their six small children to Haworth in Yorkshire in 1820. Soon after, Mrs. Bronte and the two eldest children died, leaving the father to care for the remaining three girls and a boy. Charlotte was born in 1816. Emily was born in 1818 and Anne in 1820. Their brother Branwell was born in 1817. Left to themselves, the children wrote and told stories and walked over the hills. They grew up largely self-educated. Branwell showed a great interest in drawing. The girls were determined to earn money for his art education. They took positions as teachers or taught children in their homes. As children they had all written many stories. Charlotte, as a young girl, alone wrote 22 books, each with 60 to 100 pages of small handwriting. Therefore, they turned to writing for ine. By 1847, Charlotte had written The Professor; Emily, Wuthering Heights; and Anne, Agnes Grey. After much difficulty Anne and Emily found a publisher(出版商), but there was no interest shown in Charlotte’s book. (It was not published until 1859.) However, one publisher expressed an interest in seeing more of her work. Jane Eyre was already started, and she hurriedly finished it. It was accepted at once; thus each of the sisters had a book published in 1847. Jane Eyre was immediately successful; _the other two_, however, did not do so well. People did not like Wuthering Heights. They said it was too wild, too animal-like. But gradually it came to be considered one of the finest novels in the English language. Emily lived only a short while after the publication of her book and Anne died in 1849. Charlotte published Shirley in 1849 and Villette in 1853. In 1854 she married Arthur Bell Nicholls. But only a year later, she died of tuberculosis(肺結(jié)核) as her sisters had. 76. What did the Bronte sisters want to do for Branwell Bronte? A. Help him write stories. B. Their novels interested few publishers B. None of them had more than two books published. C. None of them lived longer than 40 years old. D. Emily was the least successful of the three. D Years ago while lying in my hammock and drinking JD from the bottle, I noticed my dog dragging some thing under the fence. Upon inspection, to my dismay, I realized it was the next door neighbor’s 10-year-old daughter’s rabbit. For years I had watched her e home from school and head straight out to its cage, free it and play with it in the yard. I knew today would be no different and fearing for our dog, I had to think fast. The rabbit was quite dirty, as if it had put up quite a struggle, so I washed it off with the hose, bed it with the dog brush and blew it dry with the leaf blower. Upon finishing its grooming, I jumped the fence and replaced it back in cage hoping its death would be written off as “natural causes.” Back to the hammock and JD. Within the hour the neighbor’s Volvo pulled in as usual and out popped the little girl, and as usual she headed straight for the cage. Only this time she stopped about six feet away and screamed: “D…A…D…D…Y…!!!” He father, panic stricken, stood looking at the cage. Being the good neighbor that I rushed to fence and asked if there was any thing I could do. Her father less than calmly blurted, “What kind of sick individual would dig up a little girl’s dead rabbit and put it back in its cage?” 81. “To my dismay” means ________. Nevertheless, some of these small changes are important. There are three basic processes that cause a change in oceanic salinity. One of these is the subtraction of water from the ocean by means of evaporation(蒸發(fā))—conversion of liquid water to water vapour. In this manner, the salinity is increased, since the salts stay behind. If this is carried to the extreme, of course, white crystals of salt would be left behind; this, by the way is how much of the table salt we use is actually obtained. The opposite of evaporation is precipitation(降水), such as rain, by which water is added to the ocean. Here the ocean is being diluted(沖淡) so that the salinity is decreased. This may occur in areas of high rainfall or in coastal regions where rivers flow into the ocean. Thus salinity may be increased by the subtraction of the water by evaporation, or decreased by the addition of fresh water by precipitation or runoff. Normally, in tropical regions where the sun is very strong, the ocean salinity is somewhat higher than it is in other parts of the world where there is not as much evaporation. Similarly, in coastal regions where rivers dilute the sea, salinity is somewhat lower than in other oceanic areas. A third process by which salinity may be altered is associated with the formation and melting of sea ice. When seawater is frozen, the dissolved materials are left behind. In this manner, seawater directly beneath freshly formed sea ice has a higher salinity than it did before the ice appeared. Of course, when this ice melts, it will tend to decrease the salinity of the surrounding water. In the Weddell Sea, off America, the densest water in the oceans is formed as a result of this freezing process, which increases the salinity of cold water. This heavy water sinks and is found in the deeper portions of the oceans of the world. 84. The salinity of the oceanic water is generally higher in _________. A. tropical areas B. coastal regions C. turbulent areas D. rainy regions 85. Which of the- 1.請(qǐng)仔細(xì)閱讀文檔,確保文檔完整性,對(duì)于不預(yù)覽、不比對(duì)內(nèi)容而直接下載帶來(lái)的問(wèn)題本站不予受理。
