said,“Youll have to drop in sometime.” I immediately sensed that if I simply “dropped in” I would take my friend by surprise, and I would be discouraged by the image of her standing in her doorway, staring at me,and asking,“Oh,er.what brings you here?”Whatever happened to the unannounced dropin visit? When I was growing up in the 1960s,it seemed that peoplemostly relatives, but also friendswere always popping_in.My parents would put coffee on,and my mom would find something in the kitchen to serve along with it.Then the conversation would begin. The neighbor lady,a worrier, was unloading her sadness while my mom quietly listened. The Irish man next door had such an accent that I remember asking what language he spoke. My Polish relatives arrived in packs. But I never heard my parents say anything like “We werent expecting you” or “This isnt a good time.” Dropin visitors had a certain right of way and became No.1.What happened to such visits?Actually I know the answer.Times have changed.Everybody gets busy with work. There is no longer a stayathome mom keeping a pot of hot coffee or tea ready throughout the day for a surprise guest.Exploding malls and stores are now replacing homes as a central form of entertainment.Just the other day a former student of mine showed up.“Im sorry for the surprise visit,” my student began.“I just wanted to see if you still lived here.Ill only stay a minute.”My response was immediate.“No,you wont,” I said.“Just come in,sit, have coffee, and well talk.”I had nothing in the kitchen but we ordered pizza. And we had a lovely time.I have tried to keep the dropin tradition alive though it takes some effort.1The author thought his friends invitation“Youll have to drop in sometime”as_.Aa nice way of refusal Ban excuse of leavingCa intending to_.Aencourage people to be dropin visitorsBexplain how to deal with unexpected visitorsCshare his feelings about the dropin traditionDshow the importance of making friendsB(2012福建普通高中畢業(yè)班質(zhì)量檢查)Langston Hughes is usually thought of as a poet. But he also wrote novels, plays, short stories, essays, autobiographies, newspaper columns (欄目),childrens books, and the Yorks Harlem area.Harlem was the center of black life in New York City,Hughess creativity was influenced by his life in Harlem.Langston Hughes returned to New York during a period called the Harlem Renaissance. It took place during the nineteentwenties and thirties. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great artistic creativity among black people. For the first time, black artistic style was being widely recognized.Hughes became friends with other great black writers of the time, such as Claude McKay,Countee Cullen and Zora Neale Hurston. They hoped that great art could change the racist ideas in America about African Americans.Hughes was considered one of the leading voices of the Harlem Renaissance. He was the first poet to use the rhythms (韻律) of black music. He often wrote about the everyday experiences of black working people. And he helped bring the movement of jazz and the sound of black speech into poetry.Langston Hughes experimented with his writing.Other Harlem Renaissance writers
