About Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle plays an important role in Scotland’s capital. During the Wars of Scottish Independence the castle changed hands many times. In 1314 it was retaken from the English in a sudden night attack by Thomas Randolph, nephew of Robert the Bruce. The castle was home to kings and queens. Queen Margaret died here in 1093, and Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to James VI in the royal palace in 1566. From the 1600s onwards the castle was a military(軍事的) base. Later it also held prisoners of war. Parts of the castle are still a military base, but it is now a world-famous visitor attraction. Opening Hours The castle opens daily at 9:30 a.m. Closing time varies seasonally. 1 April-30 September:It closes at 6 p.m. 1 October-31 March:It closes at 5 p.m. The castle is closed on 25th and 26th December. On January 1st it is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and normal hours start from January 2nd. Last admission is 1 hour before closing. Ticket Types and Prices Beat the queues and book ahead online using our web store for fast-track entry at no extra cost. This myth holds __1__ certain appeal because if it __2__ (be) true, then we could instantly bee ten times __3__ (intelligent) just by firing up that sleepy majority of the brain! The idea that we use only a small fraction of the brain dates back to animal experiments in the 19th century. When scientists __4__ (stimulate) a specific part of the brain, the animal moved __5__ (it) leg or tail. And some scientists assumed that large parts of the brain were simply useless. Then, in the early 20th century, scientists observed that stimulating certain regions of the brain had no physical effects, which __6__ (call) the “silent cortex”. Today we know that much of the “silent cortex” is actually devoted to plex activities like language, learning and imagining. Actually, __7__ we sleep, many areas of the brain are extremely active. Would you be smarter if your entire brain constantly worked to maximum capacity? __8__ (interest) enough, the opposite is probably true. The less brain activity you need to perform a __9__ (give) task, the more the brain as a whole is capable __10__ doing. 1.________ 2.________ 3.________ 4.________ 5.________ 6.________ 7.________ 8.________ 9.________ 10.________ 篇章導讀:本文是一篇說明文。 1.a(chǎn) 考查冠詞。hold a certain appeal “有一些吸引力”。 根據(jù)空格后的“then we could instantly bee ...” 這里its指代the animals。 6.a(chǎn)re called which引導非限制性定語從句,which在從句中指代regions,此處描述一種研究發(fā)現(xiàn),且call與regions是邏輯上的動賓關(guān)系,故填are called。 7.a(chǎn)s/when 考查連詞。 be capable of doing sth. That was a sunny day.My father and I were on the way __1__ my uncles home.People on the street were walking leisurely and chatting __2__ ,while my father was walking in a hurry.I tried my best to __3__ him.But I was still left behind.I could not understand why he __4__ so fast.Due to the fast speed,I lost my __5__ and was pletely with sweat.Somehow,I began to be angry at him.He always did not think about my__6__. “Why do you walk so fast? 癐t is (high) time that+從句”結(jié)構(gòu)中,從句謂語動詞要用過去式或用“should+動詞原形”,且should不可省略。
