Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its businesstobusiness site,Alibaba, allowed businesses to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to judge: size.Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its markets attract 231 million active buyers,8 million sellers,11.3 billion orders a year—and Alibaba_is_just_the_middleman.It encourages people to use its markets—not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale. If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience.I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted.“You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it?” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that,my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began. Alibaba’s original businesstobusiness model now is second to consumer buying.Chinese retail (零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find.TMall is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices. What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S.is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping—bigbox retailers especially—in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao. I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is.Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping.I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chineselanguage site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad,which helps me buy goods,I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine. 1.Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in ________. A.its businesstobusiness service B.its big size C.its not charging small sellers D.its low price 2.What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the passage? A.Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites. B.Alibaba will continue to develop. C.Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers. D.Alibaba stands out as the best online site. 3.What can be inferred from the passage? A.Alibaba’s businesstobusiness service earns more money than retail now. B.Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites. C.TMall provides more profit than Taobao. D.The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover. 4.What is the passage mainly about? A.Shopping online in China is Taobao. B.Alibaba greatly influences people’s daily purchases in China. C.Shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping. D.How the author purchases online in China. B (xx沈陽二模)I have been teaching animal behavior at the Boulder County Jail in Colorado for 10 years. The course is one of the most popular in the prison.Prisoners have to earn the right to attend the course and they work hard to get in. One reason why the course is so popular is that many prisoners find it easier to connect with animals than with people, because animals don’t judge them. They trust animals in ways they don’t with humans. Yet,they hold a misunderstanding of how animals treat one another. Many admit that their own “animal behavior” is what got them into trouble in the first place.I teach that though there is petition and aggression in the animal kingdom, there is also a lot of cooperation(合作)and sympathy. Many of the students want to build healthy relationships, and they find that the class helps them.I use examples of the social behavior of groupliving animals such as wolves as a model for developing and maintaining(維持) friendships among people who must work together for their own good and also for the good of the group. It’s clear that science inspires the students here and it also gives them hope.I know some students have gone back into education after their being set free while others have gone to work for humane (人道的) societies or contributed time and money to conservation organizations. One went on to receive a master’s degree in nature writing. Science and humane education help the prisoners connect with values that they otherwise would not have done.It opens the door to understanding, trust, cooperation and hope. There’s a large population of people to whom science could mean a lot,if only they could have access to it.The class helps me,too.I get as much out of it as the students and it has made me a better teacher. 5.The author’s course is weled by the prisoners because ________. A.they consider animals their best friends B.they are curious about the animal kingdom C.they feel it easier to get along with animals D.they are more familiar with animal behavior 6.The author used wolves as an example to ________. A.provide the prisoners with more knowledge B.explain the cruel side of groupliving animals C.help the prisoners realize the importance of teamwork D.inform the prisoners that animals get people into trouble 7.We can infer from the text that some prisoners ________. A.have turned over a new leaf B.a(chǎn)re required to attend the course C.a(chǎn)re willing to learn working skills D.prefer humane education to science 【語篇解讀】 本文講述了作者作為一名教師,在一所監(jiān)獄講授animal behavior的經(jīng)歷和收獲。 5.解析:選C。根據(jù)第二段的第一句“One reason why the course is so popular is that many prisoners find it easier to connect with animals than with people, because animals don’t judge them.” 6.解析:選C。根據(jù)第四段中的“I use examples of the social behavior of groupliving animals...the good of the group.” 7.解析:選A。 A。turn over a new leaf“改過自新”。 Ⅱ. Tips for Smarter Studying Boning up(抓緊溫習(xí))for a work course or a school test?
