Stage 1 background Listen to a passage about Beauty and the Beast and answer the several questions about the passage. Background Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was a versatile French poet and artist. He made his name with the novel Les Enfants Terribles in 1929. He wrote poetry, plays and novels. He drew sketches for Diaghilev’s ballet pany, painted and directed films. He was spoiled, selfish and unkind. What did the old beggar woman want and what did she offer to the prince? She wanted a shelter from cold and she offered a single rose in return for that. What did the prince do to the beggar woman? He turned her away. What did the beggar woman do to the prince? She punished the prince and transformed him into a hideous beast. Stage 2 learning the film review Work out the structure of the whole passage. Use the linking words to make the passage more pact. Accumulate some sentence patterns about film review: The film is directed by… It is based on/adapted from the novel… The film stars…as… The film is set in … The film deals with the theme of… The sound effect, scenery, special effects, lines… are/is magnificent… The film does have its weak points. I do/don’t remend it for …. Stage 3 listening Listen and find out the subjects of their conversation, who interrupts other people most: Richard, Sue or Kate? Useful Expressions ?
