Ⅱ.Teaching Time:Four periods Ⅲ.Background Information Ⅰ.Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter has not had a good summer.Not only has he had to put up with his overbearing(專橫的)Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon and their dread of his magical abilities,but it seems as if Harry’s best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger have forgotten him—as they haven’t replied to a single one of his letters.Then,suddenly and mysteriously,house-elf Dobby appears in Harry’s bedroom and warns of great danger if the aspiring wizard(男巫).Should attempt to return to Hogwarts.Dabby is so keen to prevent the young Gryffindor from returning to the school for witches(女巫)and wizards,he has blocked all of Ron and Hermione’s correspondence(通信) from reaching Harry. But despite the elf’s mischievous(惡作劇的) efforts,the ever-determined Harry is resued from the Dursleys’ dreary(陰郁的) clutches(控制) by Ron and his brothers—with the aid of a flying car—and weled into the warmth of the weasley household.But when Harry and Ron are suspiciously prevented from entering Platform 9[SX(]3[]4[SX)] and boarding the Hogwarts Express back to school,the boys take emergency action to avoid being late for the new term—only to incur the wrath of Professor Snape,who calls for their expulsion(開除). Meanwhile,news of Harry’s first year heroism has spread throughout Hogwarts and he finds himself the centre of much unwanted attention.His new fans include Ron’s little sister Ginny;first year would-be photographer Colin Creevey;and most irritatingly(惱人地),the new Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts,Gilderoy Lockhart.But even more troublesome,some evil force is turning students(including Harry’s pal Hermione)to stone.Not even Lockhart can offer an explanation or solution to the slippery and sinister(陰險的)new terror that is gripping the school.Now all eyes are on Harry,and his so-called friends are beginning to doubt him.But Harry is not about to let his friends down and,with or without the support of Crilderoy Lockhart,he will confront the dark force lurking in his beloved school. Ⅱ.Arts xx Arts xx is an Arts Council initiative which celebrates the approach of the millennium. During each year between 1992 and xx,one city,town or region in Britain has been nominated to celebrate a particular art form.Swansea was the City of Literature in 1995;the Northern Region was the Region of Visual Arts for 1996;and the Eastern Region is the Region of Opera and Musical Theatre for 1997.Future years have been designated as follows: Yorkshire and Humberside as the Region of Photography and the Electronic Image for xx; Glasgow as the Gity of Architecture and Design for xx. Arts xx is a petitive process judged by expert Arts Council selection mittees. Winners are offered between £400 000 and £500 000 from Arts Council funds,and are expected to match this to create a wide-ranging and imaginative programme including a strong international content. The First Period Teaching Aims: 1.Talk about some artists and their paintings. 2.Train the students’ listening ability. 3.Train the students’ speaking ability. FStep Ⅱ.Warming up (Teacher uses multi-media to show two pictures on the screen.) T:First let’s look at the two pictures on the screen.One is a picture of horses and the other is a picture of birds.They are drawn by two famous artists.Who are they?Can you tell me their names? S1:The picture on the left is drawn by Xu Beihong.He is good at drawing horses. S2:The picture on the right is drawn by Qi Baishi,I think. T:You are quite right.Now open your books at Page 78.There are four paintings in your textbooks.Please look at them carefully and match them with the correct painters. (After a while teacher asks four students to give the answers.) Suggested answers: Starry Night—Vincent Van Gogh Mona Lisa—Leonardo da Vinci Hand—Poblo Picasso Shrimp—Qi Baishi T:Do you know which country each of the painters is from?What do you know about them?Please discuss in groups of four and answer the two questions. (Teacher gives students some time to discuss,then asks some of them to talk about the painters as much as they can.) Suggested answers: 1.Vincent van Gogh is from France.His painting “Sun-flower” is also very famous.He suffers from poverty all his life and kills himself in the end. 2.Leonardo da Vinci is a famous artist from Italy.He owes his success to hard work.We all know the story about him drawing eggs.He is one of the representatives in the Renaissance in Italy. 3.Pablo Picasso is from Spain.He is famous for his abstract paintings. 4.Qi Baishi was from Hunan,China.He was born in a poor family and made his living by drawing pictures.He was good at drawing flowers and creatures.His painting “Shrimp” is a most famous one. T:Now look at the three questions in your textbooks.Discuss them with your partner.Later I’ll ask you to give your answers.(After a while)Now,please answer the first question:What kind of paintings do you like? S3:I like oil paintings. T:Good.Now the second question:Can you describe one of your favorite paintings? S4:I’ll try.I like the painting “Shrimp” by Qi Baishi.The shrimps in his painting looks so natural and alive as if they are swimming in real water.They are full of vigour. Listening T:Now let’s do some listening.First I’ll play the tape for you to get a general idea.Then I’ll play the tape more times for you to get the detailed information.Meanwhile,you are asked to fill in the missing information in your textbooks.
