Why?,Do you know about Bernard Shaw?,Free talk,George Bernard Shaw,an Irish dramatist, literary critic, and a leading figure in the 20th century theater,His main works include:,Immaturity Widowers' Houses Pygmalion Man and Superman (1902), John Bull's Other Island (1904), Major Barbara (1905),Do you know anything more about Shaw?,George Bernard Shaw was a freethinker, defender of womens rights, and advocate of equality of income. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Shaw accepted the honor but refused the money. He was a very humorous playwright.,Bernard Shaws works plays on the complex business of human relationships in a social world. Phonetics Professor Henry Higgins tutors the very Cockney Eliza Doolittle, not only in the refinement of speech, but also in the refinement of her manner. When the end result produces a very ladylike Miss Doolittle, the lessons learned become much more far reaching.,Do you know the myth of Pygmalion? It is a Greek myth.,Pygmalion was a very gifted artist. He spent a long time making a stone statue of a beautiful woman. It was so beautiful that he couldnt help loving it and wanted it to be his wife.,But it was only a stone. How could he make his dream become true? He thought and thought and at last he asked the Greek Goddess to help him to bring it to life. The Greek Goddess agreed to help and his wish was granted.,The Greek myth was a popular subject for Victorian era English playwrights. Based on the classical myth, Bernard Shaw wrote a famous play Pygmalion.,My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. The musicals 1956 Broadway production was a smash hit, setting a new record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It has been called “the perfect musical”.,My Fair Lady,The Pygmalion effect, or Rosenthal effect, refers to the phenomenon that the greater the expectation placed upon people, often children or students, the better they perform.,Have you ever heard of the Pygmalion Effect ?,Professor Higgins is a man who does not like woman and is very rude to them. For a bet he agrees to teach a poor young woman (Eliza) so that she can be passed off as a rich lady in high class society. Eliza becomes accepted as a member of the upper class.,Read the passage quickly and find answers to the questions.,What do you think of Elizas social position? Why did Eliza want to be a shop assistant? How do you know that? And how to judge ones social position?,What do you think of Elizas social position? Why did Eliza want to be a shop assistant? And how to judge ones social position?,She was from the poor working class.,It is through Elizas clothes and the way she spoke (accent, poor grammar and general conversation).,At the time of the story there were very few respectable jobs for women. What is Eliza's ambition and what does she decide to do about it?,He is anxious to meet Colonel Pickering because he is researching in the same academic field as Pickering.,Her ambition is to be a shop assistant. She decides to take lessons form Professor Higgins to achieve her aim.,Eliza is from the lower class. She is respectful to people of the higher class. She calls gentleman “sir” and “cap in” ( or captain) which is a compliment.,Henry Higgins is from the middle class. He is rude to the lower class and polite to the same or upper class. He calls Eliza “your silly girl” and Pickering “my dear man” (an equal and friend).,Recognize each character's social position by their behaviour and language. Give your reasons.,Colonel Pickering is from the upper class. He is prepared to begin a conversation with Henry, whom he does not know and generous with praise to him.,The social position of the characters influences the way they behave to each other.
