111 Unit4 Attitudes towards our elders Section 1 new words and ideas THE GENERAL IDEA OF THIS PERIOD This section deal with attitudes towards elders.Owing to culture clash,the elders in the western coutries being treated differs from the ones in China. Trditionally, China is a nation that respects elders,highly valuing filial piety.As China comes to be an aging seciety ,people need to think more about the well—beings of seniors. When we want to find certain information in a text quickly,we scan the text for key words and phrases,dates ,numbers,etc.We don’t need to read the whole text word by word. T Now lets skim the text quickly and answer these questions.Hands up when you get the answers. 1 what’s a nursing room? 2 what about senior’s lodge? 3 why does Mary think grandma shouldn’t stay at a nuring room? 4 why is grandma willing to stay at a nursing room? Suggested Answers: 1 a hospital especially for old people 2 an apartment for old people 3 because grandama is too old to look after herself 4 because she needs to eat and at regular times and needs to have care and companionship all day long. Step 3 Explanaition T let’s make some discussions.First of all, I will ask you some questions 1 Do/Did some of you feel very close to a grandparent? 2 Do you have a special feeling for or close relationship with grandparent? 3 What do we call that close relationship? T I think everyone loves his or her grandparent,which is close relationship.We call the relationship “a bond”.This is different from the love between a boyfriend and girlfriend. Step 4 Discussion T Now let’s disscuss the following questions 1 What incident caused Mary to worry about her grandmother? 2 What activities did Mary enjoy doing with her grandmother? 3 Do you think Mary has a special bond with her grandmother?why or why not? SUGGESTED ANSWERS 1 Her grandma’s being sent to a nursing home 2 baking buns,taking care of the garden,and playing cards in the evening. 3 Yes.Because he has a deep love to her grandma.However,owing to culture differences,she can’t stay with her grandma. Step 5 Summary and homework T Today we have learned a text about different attitudes towards elders.First,we learnd some reading strategies:skimming and scanning.Master these and put them into use in future while reading.Through reading we know much about this attitude.Read the passage after class and get familiar with these language points.
