UNIT3 SECTION 2
THE GENERAL IDEA OF THIS SECTION
The section is about the skills of four topics:comprehension,vocabulary,listening and speaking.In this section,you will learn some practical knowledge
about the computer,the basic contructure of words,listening strategies and the method of speaking,

Step 1 Greetings
1 Greet the whole class as usual
2 Check their homework if any
Step 2 Building your vocabulary
T Today we learn the changes of some words..From the example,we see the word "envious" comes from another word "envy".Here we can see that we can add the suffix "ous" to some nouns in order to form adjectives.These adjectives describe something or someone as having a particular quality.When the noun ends in"-y",the"-y"always changes to "i' in the adjective.When the noun ends in "e",sometimes the 'e" also changes to"i" in the adjective.
T Now,please watch carefully and classify them
T What feaures the first three words?
S1 Nouns ending "e" changes to "i" in adjective.
T Very good.What about "mysterious" and "glorious"?
S2 Nouns ending "y" changes to "i" in adjective
T Wonderful.will you tell me the character of the next three words?
S3 Adding the suffix"ous' to form adjectives.
T Right.
T Now,the last one?
S4 Taking out "e" to form an adjective
T Generally speaking,there are four ways to change nouns to adjectives,which will help you grasp more new words.While learning,you should accumulate them
Step 3 Listening
Last class we learned some knowledge about the computer.Today we are going to listen to a piece of material in terms of sending messages over the internet.Before it ,I will give you a new context to get some backgroun knowledge.Please listen carefully to guess the proper meaning of these special words.
A new context for students.In this context,the new wors are: the outback;laptop;trascript;get on line;take sb surfing.
After listening to the context,the teacher should let students guess the meaning of the words.If necessary,the teacher had betterexplain them one by one .
eg.the outback---a nickname for the desert and bush country in Australia.
laptop---a portable personal computer
Then ,the next is to listen to the tape about the internet.
T This is the first time to listen to the material about the internet,so first let's share some listening strategies.
listen strategies: free listening and careful listening
we listen free ly to a text when we want to get a gerneral idea of what it is about.We try to get much knowledge The first and last sentence of a paragraph and the first and last paragraph as well as pictures and charts can help to guess what the material is about .
When we want to find certain information in the material,we listen carefully for key words and phrases,dates,numbers,etc. we don't need to listen to the whole text word by word.
T Let's listen for the first time quickly and judge the following states
1 Janny is at an Internet Cafe in the outback< >
2 Jenny is surprised she was able to get online,< >
3 At an Internet Cafe,you pay money to use the Internet.< >
4 Jenny does't like Internet Cafe because they sometimes give you a time limit of two hours< >
5 Jenny's parents are waiting to take her surfing< >
6 LiMing will say "hi" to Danny for Jenny< >
The teacher may give the answers on the screen
Then let Ss listen again to check the answers.In terms of the second passage,if there is not enough time,you may omit
Step4 speaking
After listening to the material above,the teacher can ask Ss to listen to it again,try to state each report with their own words freely.This is a good chance for them to practise oral English.
Then the teacher leads in the sentence style "speaking of ---".It is an important expression to shift from one topic to another.
Show the first listening exercise and let Ss watch how Jenny shift a topic
Jenny: At some Internet Cafe,you can use the computer for as long as you like ,but some of them will give you a time limit---especially if it's busy.
Liming: Oh,I see.
Jenny: speaking of time limits,my parents are waiting for me!
After pointing out the usage of "speaking of",the teacher may ask Ss to practise it
S1 These birds are easily caught ,especially in winter.
S2 Speaking of winter,and it's my favourite season.I Like skating in winter

Time permiting,the teacher may ask more Ss to drill it
S3 The climate of Beijing is worse than that in Kunming

Step 5 DISCUSSION
T Now you have known more about the Internet.besides,you also learn a useful expression----speaking of .
You may begin a topic and then use "speaking of " to shuffle to Internet .
Step 6 Summary and homework
Today we've learned the change of the word.In most cases,nouns ending "e"and"y" always change to "i" in the adjective.Master these and put them into use in future in future while reading.In addition,we also know something about how to send message over the internet and the important expression "speaking of ---".After class,have a further discussion with your parters.
