111 Unit 2《The Olympic Games》 Period 5 Speaking and Writing The General Idea of This Period： This period has two aims—to encourage the Ss to think and talk creatively about their hobbies and interests and to organize their ideas into a composition and to enable the students to write a report about what is needed to practice for a sport or a hobby. Teaching Aims： 1.Get the Ss to talk about their hobbies and interests. 2.Help the Ss write a report about what is needed to do to study a hobby. Teaching Important Points： 1.Get the Ss to talk about their hobbies and interests. 2.Enable the students to write a report about what is needed to study a hobby. Teaching Difficult Points： 1.How to talk about hobbies and interests. 2.How to write a report about what is needed to study a hobby. Teaching Methods： 1.Discussion in pairs and in groups of four. 2.Practice to improve the students’ writing ability. Teaching Aids： 1.A multimedia computer. 2.A projector. Teaching Procedures： Step 1 Revision T：Good morning，boys and girls!Last class we listened to some stories about the ancient Olympic Games.Remember any of the stories? S1：The story Atlanta. S2：Phidippides’ journey to ask for help.He was a hero to the Greek people.In order to remember him，we have the event of marathon race. S3：The passing of the Olympic torch. Step 2 Making a Survey on Other’s Interests or Hobbies Show some pictures in which the teacher is doing something she or he likes to arouse the students’ interest. T：Look at these pictures.What am I doing? Ss：Playing table tennis./Playing tennis./Growing flowers./Feeding fish. T：Yes.And they are all my hobbies.What about you?Do you have any hobbies? （Ask some students about their hobbies and the reason for their liking. Step 4 Writing Now you know a lot about your hobby.You know what is enjoyable about this hobby，what do you need for this hobby，what do you need to do to improve the hobby，what can be learned from the hobby and what difficult you might have about the hobby.Now I would like you to write an article about your favourite hobby，try to make it well and clearly organized.Before that I will give you a sample. Swimming is my favourite sport.I like it because it can bring me much fun.The process of learning swimming is very interesting.You can try different ways of swimming，such as breaststroke and backstroke.You can swim at any time of the year if you like.In hot summer，if you jump into the river or the sea to have a swim，you will feel cool and comfortable.Even in cold winter，you can swim if you are brave enough.It’s a healthy sport and it can build up our body.If you’re a beginner，you must be careful.You’d better not swim alone and bring life buoy with you in case of danger.If you want to be a good swimmer，you must have a lot of practice and have great determination.Explain why this can be a sample（the topic sentence，the organization and transitional words） Then ask them to write a draft in consideration of the discussion.After they finish，exchange their drafts and find some mistakes for each other.
