Across the Arctic, temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in the world. As that happens, the tree line that marks where forests stop and the treeless tundra (凍原) starts has been moving northward. Trees growing along the tree line must protect themselves from the cold wind. To do this,_plants tend to grow horizontal (水平的) branches low to the ground. The energy it takes for trees to grow this way means they don't have enough energy to make seeds. But as Earth's climate has been warming, trees no longer have to just grow horizontally. Many can instead grow up toward the sky. This takes less energy. And with all that leftover energy, these trees have started producing more seeds. This happens especially in places where white spruce (白云杉) grows.White spruce, which is a North American tree, is quite able to produce a lot of seeds, which can move long distances in the wind. When windblown seeds end up on the tundra beyond the tree line, they eventually can sprout (發(fā)芽) new trees. This explains how a forest can move. Of course, the process would work only if the tundra were warm enough. But in recent years, the whole planet has been warming.New trees will provide shelter for some snow. Keeping the sun's rays from making the white surface disappear. Instead, the trees absorb the sun's heat. This warms the surrounding air. The extra warmth encourages even more trees to produce seeds. That further boosts a forest's ability to expand. In addition, more trees will trap more snow, preventing much of it from being blown away. Snow can trap heat in the soil below, which encourages trees to grow. The recent rise of temperatures has helped more trees grow past the tree line. People worry about impacts on the animals that depend on frozen conditions for food and shelter. 4What is the main cause of the trees in the Arctic moving northward?AThe shrinking of northern tundra.BThe abundant resources in the north.CThe fierce and cold wind.DThe rising temperature. 根據(jù)第二段第二、三句“Across the Arctic, temperatures are rising faster than anywhere else in the world. As that happens, the tree line that marks where forests stop and the treeless tundra (凍原) starts has been moving northward.” D。5What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 mean?ATo produce more seeds.BTo move northward.CTo respond to the climate change.DTo protect themselves from the cold wind. 根據(jù)第二段第四句“Trees growing along the tree line must protect themselves from the cold wind.” D。6The passage is most probably taken from _.Aa fashion magazineBa health reportCa science reportDa children's magazine答案:C推理判斷題。 A long time ago, there lived a very, very wise king. He was so wise that he knew the ways of almost everything. Then one day, a tiny_bee lost her way and flew right into the_king's_beautiful_palace. The little bee begged the king, “Please, let me live, and I will serve you some other day.” The king was amused to think a tiny bee could one day serve such a powerful king. He released the bee and said, “Be on_your_way,_for I need nothing from you today.”Many days later, the_people_of_the_kingdom filled the palace yard. A queen was coming to visit from a faraway land. She heard many people claim this king was very wise. She had to know for sure that they were not all just lies. “I hear you are wise,” she said. “You are wiser than the rest. Would you be willing to put your wisdom to a test?” The king agreed, and she did her best with puzzles, tricks, and difficult tests, but all in vain (徒勞)Now the_queen was quite angry at the king's show of wisdom, and was more determined to find a way to trick him. “We must have a test,” she challenged her advisors, “to prove this king's a fool, not to prove he is wiser!” So they came up with a plan that would surely not fail. It indeed was a test to make the others look pale. They ordered the queen's craftsmen (工匠) to make ninetynine flowers, fake (假的) through and through, but looking so real. When they are finished, even the queen could not tell they were fake. She was sure the king would make the very same mistake. And then from the king's garden, she took just one real_flower,_and cleverly hid it among all the others. Paragraph 1:The king, not wanting to be fooled by this queen, accepted the challenge. This competition between the king and the_queen attracted public concern. All the_people_of_the_kingdom expected the result with excitement. The wise king, of course, didn't want to let his people down, so he tried to figure out a way to overcome this difficulty. At this time, the tiny_bee came to offer his help. He said, “It's time that I serve you and I promise I would find the real_flower for you.” The king had no choice but to trust him. So he carried the bee to face these flowers.Paragraph 2:The tiny bee quickly flew over the flowers and in no time at all found the real flower. When the king put this flower in front of the queen, she and her craftsmen were all shocked by what they saw. The queen was impressed by his wisdom completely and asked him his secrets of success.
