He was obsessed with this desirehe ate, slept, and walked with one and only dream: to die, having accomplished every single thing he was able to accomplish. There were so many things he could do. He felt like the whole world could be his, _16_ he set his mind to it. He knew that his _17_ had no limits. He knew that he could accumulate _18_ that would dwarf (使相形見絀) that of ancient kings; he knew that he could _19_ books that would shake the minds of generations; he knew that he could _20_ things that would forever change the lives of millions of people. He lived, constantly feeling the power withinand that power knew no bounds. There was only one problem: having such a potential, but only one _21_, he had to make a choice. He had to decide where to _22_ all of his ability. Making that decision was extremely hard, for any _23_ meant cutting off some future achievements. In the meantime, he went to school, graduated, found a job, married, and _24_ children. And he spent every minute of his spare time trying to decide _25_ he should bring his potential into full play.(后續(xù)內(nèi)容,請見下頁。)16A.before Bsince Cif Dthough17A.wisdom Bpotential Cworld Dfreedom18A.courage Binterest Cknowledge Dpower19A.write Bread Cbuy Dedit20A.invent Bacquire Cadopt Ddestroy21A.step Blife Cchance Dcondition22A.promote BaccumulateCincrease Dapply23A.choice Bmistake Cfailure Deffort24A.assisted Bloved Craised Dpunished25A.why Bwhere Cwhen DwhetherTime went by, and he grew _26_. When my parents bought the house, in 1982, they were only two years older than I am now. I tried to imagine myself in two years, ready to settle down and buy the house I'd still be living in almost 30 years later. It seemed ridiculous. On a practical level, there's no way I could afford to buy a house anytime soon. More importantly, I wouldn't want to. I'm not sure where I'll be living in two years, or what kind of job I'll have. And I don't think I'll be ready to settle down and stay in one place. So this is probably the generation gap that divides my friends and me from our parents. When our parents were our age, they'd gotten their education, chosen a career, and were starting to settle into responsible adult lives. My friends and I“Generation Y”still aren't sure what we want to do with our lives. Whatever we end up doing, we want to make sure we're happy doing it. We'd rather take risks first, try out different jobs, and move from one city to another until we find our favorite place. We'd rather spend our money on travel than put it in a savings account. This casual attitude toward responsibility has caused some critics to call my generation “arrogant”, “impatient”, and “overprotected”. Some of these complaints have a point. As children we were encouraged to succeed in school, but also to have fun. We grew up in a world full of technological innovation: cellphones, the Internet, instant messaging, and video games. Our parents looked to rise vertically (垂直地)starting at the bottom of the ladder and slowly making their way to the top, on the same track, often for the same company. That doesn't apply to my generation. Because of that, it may take us longer than our parents to arrive at responsible, stable adulthood. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. In our desire to find satisfaction, we will work harder, strive for ways to keep life interesting, and gain a broader set of experiences and knowledge than our parents' generation did. By Ariel Lewiton36When the author walked through her parents' house, she _. DThe factors that have changed the young generation.1.C考查分詞作狀語的用法。be concerned about意為“為擔(dān)心”。 set down 寫下。 look for 尋找;take in 欺騙,吸收; give up 放棄。 go through 經(jīng)歷;經(jīng)受;go into 進入;look through 瀏覽;look into 調(diào)查。 add to “使(數(shù)量)增加;使(規(guī)模)擴大”。 make for 有利于,促成;focus on 集中于;devote to 獻身于。 in case意為“以免,萬一”;as if意為“好像”;in order that意為“為了”;only if意為“只有”。 on purpose 故意地。 你認(rèn)為他是故意這樣做的嗎?at present 現(xiàn)在; at the end 在結(jié)束時; right away 立刻。 recover from 從中恢復(fù)。 It/This is the first/secondtime that從句中用現(xiàn)在完成時。 a great deal of與a large amount of意為“大量的”,均修飾不可數(shù)名詞;C項本身有誤,應(yīng)為plenty of。15D“介詞with賓語副詞”構(gòu)成with的復(fù)合結(jié)構(gòu)。. He looked closely into these eyes表示“仔細(xì)地看了看自己的眼睛”,所以選D項,用closely。 I wandered through my parents' house, I had a sudden, scary realization.
