Finding “topic sentences” is a very useful reading strategy. As we read, we need to find “topic sentences”. These sentences usually give us a “summary” or overall meaning of each paragraph and help us understand what the paragraph is about. More detail and explanation come after the topic sentence. A topic sentence is usually at the beginning of a paragraph or the end of it. How many paragraphs does the article have ?Ss: FourT: Please skim(快速跳讀) the article and find the topic sentences of each paragraph and underline them.T: Whats the topic sentence of Paragraph 1/paragraph2 /Paragraph3 / Paragraph 4?Ss: Paragraph 1: but it can be very useful to understand.Paragraph 2: Etiquette is not the same in every culture or every situation.Paragraph 3: If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them suggestions. Exercises for Unit 7 Section Reading I: Guess the meanings of the underlined words from the context (從上下文) .Match the underlined words with their English meanings:Would you mind keeping your voice down ?If you spend some time in an English-speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and polite social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first . But it can be very useful to understand. Etiquette is not the same in every culture and every situation. For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. . However, if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China, we all know etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum, or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice down in public places. In fact, we should also take care not to cough or sneeze loudly in public. If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them suggestions. Perhaps one of the most polite ways is to ask someone, Would you mind doing this or Would you mind not doing that . For example, if someone cuts in front of you in a line, you should ask them, Sorry, would you mind joining the line ? If someone is smoking on the bus, you could ask, Excuse me, could you please put out the cigarette ?People dont usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world ! For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask them, would you mind picking it up ?1. behavior a. be careful2. at first b. the way people do things3. uncomfortable c. in a polite way4. When someone is talking loudly next to you, you could say politelyto them, “Would you mind _your voice ?” What annoys you ? I get annoyed when. What do you usually say when that happens ? I usually say, “Would you mind (not ) doing? / Could you please(not) do?”Step 2: Presentation 在多媒體上展示生活中常見的(也是課文中提到的)六個不好的行為,借此教學(xué)一部分新單詞:cut(cutting) in line, wait in line / join the line, smoke(smoking), put(putting) out , cigarette, spit(spitting), talk loudly, keepdown, voice, drop litter, pickup, cough loudly, sneeze(sneezing) loudly, break the rules of etiquette. What can you do if you see someone breaking the rules of etiquette ? Would you mind(not)doing? / Could you please (not) do? 1. something about etiquette: Etiquette is a very important idea to understand. Etiquette is not the same in every culture and in every situation. Some rules of etiquette are the same almost everywhere in the world.2. ways to give polite suggestions3. some words and expressions讓學(xué)生跟讀今天所學(xué)的內(nèi)容。 Step 7: Consolidation(If we have time) Step 8: Homework Level A: Write a letter to someone who always annoys you, using the words and expressions: talk loudly, keepdown, voice, drop litter, pickup, Would you mind (not )doing? / Could you please(not) do? 等。 Level B: Look for more information about etiquette in different cultures and in different situations on the Internet. 本課中,本人用六幅圖片教學(xué)課文中的表示行為的詞匯: cut in line, wait in line / join the line, smoke*, put out, cigarette, spit, keepdown, voice*, drop* litter*, pick*up, cough*, sneeze(其中標(biāo)有*的是四會詞)。2. 在Find the best summaries for each paragraph 利用以舊帶新,英文釋義的方法教學(xué)詞匯:impolite*, uncomfortable, politely, allow*, break* the rules, behavior, public*, perhaps, take care, be careful*, at first(其中標(biāo)有*的是四會詞)。 4. 5. 利用“用關(guān)鍵詞提問”的方式,強化一部分四會詞匯: break the rules of etiquette, cut in line, smoke, drop litter, be careful。6. 如果要求學(xué)生分組討論“Which are good behaviors ? Which are bad behaviors ?” 一些不好的行為的詞匯以及應(yīng)該做的行為的詞匯,如, talk loudly, keep your voice down, drop litter, pickup, smoke, put out, cigarette, play too loud, turn down, spit.
