Several alternative explanations are provided, but only one is correct. Be prepared to give your ideas to the class with your reasons.,Sample dialogue,S1: Now Let me see. There are four possibilities suggested here. So lets examine them one by one. S2: OK. The first one is a water lift. Do you think that means it takes water from the ground to a higher place? S1: I suppose so. Well, this drawing shows a thick rope and perhaps a water wheel. Do you think water could travel up a rope? S2: I dont think so. Do you think its a moving series of small buckets rather than a rope? S1: I suppose it cold be and in that case that would work as a water lift. Lets look at the next possibility anyway?,S2: Do you think its a messenger for sending messages? That doesnt sound very useful. Id have thought birds would have been better and easier. so I dont think its that. S1:Nor me. Now what about it being a water slide? If so it seems odd it should change direction halfway. S2: I agree with you. Thats odd and I dont think its a water slide. Now is it a lift? S1: I suppose it could take items up to the higher floors, but you would need someone to move them from the first lift to the second, wouldnt you? S2: Yes and theres no one there. So I dont think thats possible either. I think it must be the water lift. S2: So do I.,Look at these Chinese inventions and in pairs discuss what you know about them.,Picture 1: An abacus The abacus was and is used to solve complicated mathematical problems. Ancient Chinese people used small pieces of bamboo before the abacus was invented. By the 14th century, the abacus was used all over China.,Picture 2: A printing press Around 700 AD the Chinese invented block printing. The first moveable printing machines was invented by a commoner, Bi Sheng, in the Song Dynasty. Each piece of type was made of wet clay upon which was carved one Chinese character.,Picture 3: A south pointer It is widely accepted that the Chinese were the first to discover and make use of the magnetic qualities of iron. In the picture shown here the magnetised spoon is place on a copper board always pointing to the south.,Writing Task,a description of the object what it was used for how it was used when it was invented,Write an entry for an encyclopedia about one of the Chinese inventions. Choose one and prepare to write your report. You must explain some important points in your report:,Make sure in your final version that each point is a new paragraph. Make the first sentence of each paragraph a topic sentence and then add all the information. Finish the report by stating when it was produced in China and when it was found in Western countries.,
