Poaching has worried environmentalists for years and, despite laws, this terrible crime has yet to be stopped. Poaching is a serious problem, especially in Africa and Asia. This crime is done for mercial profit (商業(yè)利益), meaning hunters kill animals illegally and sell their most worthy parts. Although poachers usually hunt tigers, elephants and rhinos, they kill sharks and whales, too. This illegal hunting has led to decreasing populations of many species. Many nations have banned poaching, but enforcement (執(zhí)行) is difficult. The small number of police officers trained to deal with this creates an unfair advantage for poachers. Poachers usually kill animals for only one product: tigers are killed for their striped fur, elephants their ivory tusks and rhinos their large horn. The bodies of the animals are left to rot. Sharks’ fins are cut off and their bodies thrown back into the ocean. Without fins they can’t swim and will die. The illegally obtained fins are used to make shark fin soup. The laws that “protect” animals are no more than pieces of paper. The current poaching bans need better enforcement, and I have a plan. The number of enforcers needs to be increased so that there are enough to watch the herds and make sure poachers can’t shoot the animals. The reserve parks in Africa should bee a huge zoo so that the animals can move but within a fenced area. Another idea is to build a concrete enclosure instead of fences. Watchtowers could be constructed so enforcers can monitor a wide variety of poacher targets. This may not completely end the problem, but it would slow it down. Poaching is a serious problem and a criminal act. The effects of poaching will be felt for centuries to come, and if there are any still alive, the only place to see animals might be in a zoo. 73. Poaching has not been stopped mainly because _____. A. there are no laws to ban this crime B. this crime has not been that serious C. effective measures have not been taken D. the author’s plan has not been adopted 74. What is the basic reason for poaching? A. People’s needs for food. B. People’s desire for profit. C. The lack of protecting laws. D. The worsening of environment. 75. We can infer from the last paragraph that _____. A. poaching will be more serious if not stopped B. the effects of poaching will be removed soon C. it has been too late to stop poaching now D. zoos are the best place to protect animals 76. The purpose of this passage is to _____. A. show the astonishing fact of the bloody illegal hunting B. provide some suggestions on banning poaching C. warn the seriousness of the present animal condition D. call on people to protect environment and animals 73.【答案】C 【試題解析】細(xì)節(jié)理解題,一般。 A項(xiàng)“沒有法律禁止這項(xiàng)犯罪”與文中第一段最后一句話“despite laws”矛盾,故排除;B項(xiàng)“這犯罪不嚴(yán)重”與文中第二段第一句話“Poaching is a serious problem”相悖,故排除;D項(xiàng)“作者的建議未被采取”在文中未提及。 A special laboratory at the University of Chicago is busy only at night. It is a dream laboratory where researchers are at work studying dreamers. Their findings have discovered that everyone dreams from three to seven times a night, although in ordinary life a person may remember none or only one of his dreams. While the subjects(接受實(shí)驗(yàn)的人)—usually students—sleep, special machines record their brain waves and eye movements as well as the body movements that signal the end of a dream. Surprisingly, all subjects sleep soundly. Observers report that a person usually fidgets(煩躁不安) before a dream. Once the dream has started, his body relaxes and his eyes become more active, as if the curtain had gone up on a show. As soon as the machine shows that the dream is over, a buzzer wakens the sleeper. He sits up, records his dream, and goes back to sleep—perhaps to dream some more. Researchers have found that if the dreamer is wakened immediately after his dream, he can usually recall the entire dream. If he is allowed to sleep even five more minutes, his memory of the dream will have disappeared. 63. According to the passage, researchers at the University of Chicago are studying ____. A. contents of dreams B. the meaning of dreams C. dreamers while they dream D. the progress of sleeping 64. Their finding has discovered that _____. A. One person dreams only one dream a night B. dreams are easily remembered C. dreams are likely to be frightening D. everyone dreams every night 65. The machines being used in the experiment record _____. A. the depth of sleep B. what a sleeper dreams during his sleep C. the subjects’ brain waves and eye movements D. how many dreams a person has 66. A person would be most likely to remember the dream that _____. A. was of most interest to him B. occurred immediately after he went to sleep C. was the longest one to him D. occurred just before he woke up 63.【答案】C 【試題解析】文章第一段It is a dream laboratory where researchers are at work studying dreamers. Their findings have discovered that everyone dreams from three to seven times a night, although in ordinary life a person may remember none or only one of his dreams. 65.【答案】C 【試題解析】根據(jù)第二段special machines record their brain waves and eye movements as well as the body movements that signal the end of a dream. Researchers have found that if the dreamer is wakened immediately after his dream, he can usually recall the entire dream. 3.參考詞匯:偶像—idol; 崇拜—worship Our class have had a discussion about idol worship 六、書面表達(dá) Possible version Our class have had a discussion about idol worship. Some of my classmates consider that we need idols that have set good examples to us. And our idols’ deeds can inspire us to make efforts to make progress. Besides, not a few famous people have benefited from idol worship since they experienced their roads to be famous. However, others do not agree. They believe we never need idols and idol worship can do nothing but waste money and time which we should have spent on studies. What’s worse, some unhealthy idol worship may do harm to ourselves as well as others. As for me, I’m not opposed to idol worship, but we must be aware that idol worship can’t take the place of our efforts and our future will and should be created by our own hands.
