1. 表示請求允許時,意為”可以”,常用于口語中,此時可與may互換.如:
Can I read your newspaper ?我可以看一下你的報紙嗎
Can / may I have some cookies , Mom ?媽媽,我可以吃點兒餅干嗎?
2. 表示懷疑或不相信時,意為”可能”.多用于否定句中.如:
It can' t be true .這不可能是真的.She can' t be at home .她不可能在家.
